Broken laptop
Posted by daverutt on November 19th, 2003

My Girlfriend has a Hewlett Packard Notebook laptop, about 2 years old
which has recently stopped working. It slowly sees to have
deteriorated from working completely, to not charging the battery but
working off the mains supply to now not even working off the mains
supply. The little battery shaped light doesn't even come on now when
its attacvhed to the mains (either to show that the battery is
charging or that it's fully charged) I originally thought it may be a
loose connection on the mains inuput as when you wiggled it about the
battery light would flash on and off so took it to a repari specialist
who resoldered the connecting board, however this doesn;t seem to have
done anything.

Anybody got any ideas as to what may be wrong?

cheers

First question is, when you had it repaired, why didn't they verify that
it worked? If you paid money to have it fixed, go back.

Wire on wall warts break most commonly in two places. At the plug
and at the wall wart box. You can verify output with a voltmeter.
That's not 100% verification that it will work, but it's likely.

it seemed to work fine after it was repaired, the bloke who repaired
it said that he couldn't see anything wrong with the actual circuit
board (i thought there may be a loose connection on it), but just
resoldered it anyway just in case, and it just seems to have died
slowly over the past couple of weeks. I've tried running it witouh
the battery in, just off the mains power and it is just completely
dead. I'll try it with a voltmeter and see what i come up with

Been there recently on an HP N5295. Same exact symptoms. Resoldered it
three times without success. Replaced the jack on the mainboard. Worked OK
for a little while. Resoldered the TOP of the circuit board as well as the
bottom of the circuit board with another new jack. Works fine now.

The other posters are right about the power supply too. Have a spare HP
supply that was broken right at the plug. $1.00 repair part bought me a
spare supply again.
