Is building your own laptop hard?
Posted by . on November 19th, 2003

I've built computers before, but I've never messed with laptops. Are they
hard to build? Where do you get the parts for them? I can't say I've ever
seen a case for laptop for sale.

Surely it woud be. Lots of surface mount (SMT) components. And most
use proprietary chips which integrate many functions in one chip.

You don't, you can't. A laptop is, with few exceptions, a single
indivible element and unlike a desktop not the sum of independent parts.

I think if you could get the parts and case it wouldn't be that hard
but you can't.

This subject seems to come up every so often on this newsgroup, as does the
question: "How do I clean my laptop lcd?" Anyway, the simple answer is no.
Many of the parts are proprietary and even if you could get everything you
needed, it would cost WAY more than it would to just buy one.

very hard if you want it to be small. Just buy an very old damaged laptop
and unscrew it. Then imagine that newer laptops are even more compact and
then imagine that you dont have the tools to manufacture all the funny
things inside even the old laptop and then imagine that you would need to
buy lot of hardware at some chipfactories that to not deal with
end-customers. But of course you can buy the most important parts (display
etc. at some shops like conrads (germany).

The truth: forget about it
The second truth : I didnt hear of anyone actually doing it, so maybe you
could start a new aerea by building the first one. I would ask at slashdot
if you are really obsessed by this topic If you are : please report here
frequently and tell us how its going on.
