Built my own Laptop - battery operated power supply & smallest form factor PC
Posted by Virgo_guy on December 17th, 2003

Build your own laptop or notebook too!

I built my own Laptop - Its just the smallest form factor PC, with a
battery operated power supply, but I added an extra power supply and
switch, so that I can convert to AC when needed.

Its just about the size of a playstation or an Xbox, I even took it in
my car and hooked it up to my DVD monitor, it's all good.

NOW Finally, I can sit on my bed and surf the internet, It's actually
very easy, and cheap, if you buy all your parts your self.

Motherboards have continuously shrunk in size and in power
consumption.

The "mini-itx" form factor is small enough, and the power consumption
low enough, that a laptop can be built. If you find a smaller form
factor regular PC let me know.

Build your own laptop or notebook too! This will bring the price down
fast and it will be cheap.

I only have a few questions:
Has anyone else ever done this? Do you have any better ideas? How
did you do it?

Oops, yes, the pictures of mine are posted at:

http://www.mini-itx.com/projects.asp

If you use their motherboard, which I am sure must be the smallest,
then you can post your pictures there.

Anyway, someone built the whole thing inside of a Windows XP box, its
smaller than mine. I put mine inside of an old box I got at a thrift
store.

Or, if you don't need a CD-ROM, or can hook up an external CD-ROM drive
instead, here's a few other ready-to-go super-small PC laptops that'll
do the same:

1) Toshiba Libretto
2) Sony U-series
3) JVC Interlink XP 7xxx series

These notebooks are all about the size of a VHS plastic tape case or
smaller, and can easily fit inside the box along with an external laptop
DVD-RW drive.

If you have the guts to rip apart the Sony PCG-X505, then you can easily
flip the screen around 180 degrees, make the keyboard a flip down, and
have the entire unit in this box as well. This baby will run a 1Ghz P-M
w/o a cooling fan!

With the other laptops, if you remove the LCD screen from the hinge,
flip it 180degrees, and mount it on the box, you'll have use of the
monitor as well.

All of these are just the same and you can only go smaller, esp. if you
checkout some of the super-small PC developement online.

In the end, the WinXP box PC looks huge in comparison to what's already
out there, but nice mod nevertheless. May want to see about putting in
a LCD panel in the back or front as a second or primary display. (Just
flip the box backwards to reveal the PC, flip it to face front to 'hide'
the PC.) Pop up or built-in speakers, too.

If you drop in a laptop, or figure out a way to hook up an internal
battery pack, you can have the flip-down-keyboard, built-in-speakers,
built-in-LCD-panel WinXP box PC to go as well.... (sounds more and more
like a laptop with a box around it tho....)

Hmmmm, if you drop the panel or cd-rom or other components into an
Office XP box, and wirelessly network them, that maybe another project
to expand to...

eg. here's a Hardback book sized PC running MiniITX MB:

--The board requires +/-12vdc, +/-5vdc, and +3.3vdc. Fortunately,
there are several 12vdc to ATX adapter boards available such as the
small iTuner Pw-60 DC-DC convertor:

http://store.ituner.com/ituner/posoformi.html

The VIA Technologies, Inc.
website includes a page about the use of the Mini-ITX boards as Car
PCs that include additional information on operating the boards from
12vdc (see link in my previous post to this thred).

The 1GHz M10000 consumes about 10 watts of power peak while the slower
models peak at about 5 watts.

I guess this would actually be called a "BOOK PC" or "HARDBACK PC"

-anyway the book pc and a TFT Keyboard/Monitor combo would be perfect,
but I have only seen the rack mount style for servers.

I have not seen any Portable Video Monitors or Monitor/Keyboard
combo's for regular PC's that are not in the Thousands of dollars.

I just want something with a WIDE base at the bottom.(laptop style,
L-shape?)

That will keep it steady on a couch or mattress, and that is portable.

I could also use a wireless keyboard and mouse.

I was thinking I could use a mobile car TFT monitor and then make a
L-shaped apparatus with rubber hinges to mount the monitor onto if I
can not find anything else.

Question:
-Has anyone seen any monitors like this for a PC, or have any useful
Ideas on how to build one?

Thanks in advance!

How did you resolve heat problems? How hot is your laptop on the lap?
