- Compaq won't boot off hard drive ?
- Posted by Frank on November 12th, 2007
I have a compaq Evo N410C and I bought a 30gig hard drive which this laptop can't boot from.
The BIOS system tests recognize it but when booting a little flashing underscore is all I get.
I put the drive in another laptop and it works fine. I took a 40gig out of another laptop and that
one did the same thing in this compaq, so it's the laptop not the drives. I put a 6gig into
the compaq and that one boots without a problem.
Any ideas? All the drives have .5amp power, all work in other laptops. It's like the compaq
can't boot off any large drives even when the bios recognizes the drive
Thanks.

Just because the bios can show the size of the drive, it doesn't mean it can
use it! Try using the makers install utility, which should install an
overlay (Bios Extension) that will make it usable. Another way is to
partition the drive. Check with Compaq to find out the maximum size the bios
can handle. There may even be an updated version of the bios that can be
downloaded and flashed.
