- Compaq won't hibernate? ? ?
- Posted by Ray Jenkins on November 23rd, 2003
My older Compaq Presario 1240 won't go into hibernation. The manual says it
should hibernate with a press of the power button, but nothing happens.
It will go into stand-by mode, but all that does is turn the display off. I
want a complete halt followed by return to where I left off.
Any ideas welcome.

Hi Ray,
I have one of those, and there are two things I would check;
1. Do you have a valid hibernate file in your root directory?
2. Did you check your power management settings under in the Control Panel
I might also add that I did upgrade the RAM (96MB) & the OS (Wini98se), and it still works like a champ.
Just out of curiosity, what do you use your 1240 for? I've upgraded 4/5 times since I bought that 1240, I found a nice home for
it with a friend who is a writer and likes OpenOffice.
Ciao . . .

Should be a set up option in Control Panel re power.
I can make this one shut down, hibernate or standby with power button or
by closing the cover.

Thanks CJD --
I'll look into those ideas. I reinstalled Win98 a few years back and the
1240 hasn't worked entirely well since then.
Actually, it's not mine, although I've used it a good bit through the years.
It belongs to a friend who got it second hand for $400. She's now giving it
to another friend and I'm just trying to set it up.
It's been a real workhorse. We did have to get a new power supply at one
point, and also had to install new lamps in the display. But we've gotten
our money's worth.
Any idea what this laptop cost new, and when it was put on the market?
I'd guess $3000 and around 1998.

Hi Ray,
I think it came out in mid-1997. I got mine in December 1998, and I spent $1,799 at CompUSA. I also got the 3 year warranty from
them and that was another $300.
The 1240 came with Win98, but it ran MUCH better with Win98se Lite.

Those laptop prices sure have gone down -- I still have a used Toshiba
T1960CT. It works reasonably well for Juno e-mail, but you can pretty much
forget trying to connect to the Internet. I have heard that machine cost
$2500 in 1993.
I'm sending this on an HP Pavilion ZE5375 which I got at Best Buy for $1250,
with rebates. And I really overspent even at that, because if I were doing
it over, I'd get an HP or a Dell for $800 or so.
By the way, I had to send my ZE5375 back to the factory TWICE for serious
hardware failures. It's working OK at the moment.

You should be able to find a compaq softpak or whatever they're calling
software upgrades today, to set it up for you.
Sometimes you need a hibenration file. Other times it's a partition
that's required.
Be aware that hibernation sucks. Was a good idea when the vendor had
control of everything. There's so much add-in stuff today that I've
found hibernation just doesn't work. The most obvious issue is that
the network connection goes away and sometimes hangs the whole network.

Hi Ray,
I am using a HP Pavilion zd7010us (that I just picked up on Tuesday), and I really like it. It has everything built in except
for a floppy and a serial port. Size wise, it is a monster, but it is a powerhouse and worth the extra size and weight. I'm a
pretty big guy, so I don't really notice the additional weight. The size is another story. I bought the only bag that Best Buy
had that would fit it. I will be looking for a bag that can also carry all of my accessories.
I spent $2000 for my laptop, by I am programmer, and I just write off the expense on my taxes.
What's the specs on your ze5375?
My specs are;
Pentium4 at 2.66GHz (512KB of L2 cache)
512MB of DDR RAM

I can't recall the specs but it is close to what you list, except for a 15"
display.
