Comparing Gateway 200X to competitors: any feedback?
Posted by Matt on November 13th, 2003

I've been scoping out the Gateway 200X and have put in an order for
it. While I'm waiting for it, I thought I would do more research on
competitive products and/or 200X shortcomings.

My only beefs with 200X that I can find thus far are it's short
battery life and the lack of hard-drive removability (possibly--I
asked about this in another post to this group). However, it seems
the battery issue is address with a $100 battery upgrade, moving it
from less than 2 hrs battery to 3+ hours.

I very much like the combination of price ($1500), 14" display,
weight, internal wireless-G, and a big 60GB hard drive (which I need).

Anything else compare with the 200X in these regards?

Thanks for any help,
Matt

I think 3 hours battery life is still not enough. For Centrino machines,
it might be better to go for those 5+ hours machines because there do have
such choices out there and I believe battery life is one of the most
imporntant factors when choosing a laptop.

Do you have recommendations for the 5+ hours battery-life machines?
Vendor and model numbers?

Based on the reviews at
http://reviews.cnet.com/4521-6527_7-...tml?tag=subnav

At least the following three machines have 5 hours battery life.

Acer TravelMate 803LCi, (4400 mAh battery... there's an optonal 6800 mAh
battery)
Toshiba Tecra M1 (not sure ... should be 4400 mAh battery)
IBM ThinkPad T40 (6600 mAh battery.... which has nearly 7 hours of battery
life)

Anyway, all of these three models are more expensive.

If you are tight on budget, there are still some cheaper models whose
battery can last 5 hours

Like IBM ThinkBad R40 (but I heard that the quality of the R-series is not
very good.) and Acer TravelMate 290.
I think you can have a look at the Acer TM 290 because it's really cheap
($999) and probably has almost everything you want in addition to 5 hours
battery life.

I have a IBM T40 2373-82u with the large 9 cell battery. This
machine, in my opinion is perfect. Keyboard, display, etc. Cant say
anything bad. Roughly 7 hours of battery with screen brightness on 4
or 5 and wireless card running and connected. Check one of these out.
I got rid of a Dell Lat D600 to buy this, and in my opinion, there is
no comparison. I dont know much about the Gateway machine so I cant
compare.
