Computers wreck your eyesight
Posted by pedro on October 9th, 2006

hi there
wondering if anyone can help me regarding attachments to computer
screens supposed to lessen eyesight damage. Ive been using laptop
computer/ ie flat screen / for 3 yrs and have noticed a reduction in
eyesight perception. i came across a slightly darkened screen
secondhand that is apparently to put in front of screen. it has an
earthing cable attached. is this to avoid eyesight damage and will it
help me on the toshiba laptop or is it just for the old type of
screen, ie like the old tele. if not what is it for??
thanks in advance for your help pedro

I think it's an anti-glare screen, and the ground connection was to
discharge static when it was used with CRT-based (e.g. picture tube)
displays. There is no reason to belive it will have any impact on your
eyesight. Nor is there any particular evidence that comptuer displays
(either CRT or LCD) inherintly cause eyesight damage at all. Your
perception that there has been eyesight damage is subjective, and of
course you have no way of knowing what your eyesight would be had you
not used a computer at all over the past 3 years. If you think that
there is an issue, by all means see a qualified eye-care professional.
Your particular configuration, with your particular eyesight, could be
causing eye strain. I myself have a pair of glasses just for computer
use that are optimized to focus my vision at 20 inches (about 500mm).

Well my eye doctor mentioned things like staring at the screen
diminishes the blink reflex so they eye surface dries out. Also as the
focal point is always the same distance that is not good either as you
are not changing between close and distant. Everyone knows you should
take a break every so often and just look around.

Also unrelated, as people can not type as fast as they think computer
users tend to exhibit more dyslexic behaviours in their typing.

Looks like in your case you are one of the rare people where the
dyslexia advanced to stage two which is brain mush. Stage three
follows which is usually characterized by expletives.
