CPU noise?
Posted by news on November 21st, 2003

Did anyone hear weak CPU (?) noise during operations(even mouse moving)? It
is coming from CPU/fan area.

Yes, I get that on my Inspiron 4000 with 600MHz Pentium III. Most people
probably don't notice it because the room has to be very quiet to hear it
and you have to have a silent hard drive (and no CPU fan running, of
course) Some people might not even have good enough hearing to notice it
unless they really listen for it, it is pretty subtle, at least on mine.

If you run something in the background that takes up all the available CPU,
you won't hear the noise (but it'll heat up your laptop and eventually the
fan will come on) Dunno if it is something weird with speedstep that is
universal, or if it is only on some models or what. Since I only notice
it at home if I have no other noise at all around me it doesn't really
bother me too much, I've kind of gotten used to it. Its never anywhere
near quiet enough in any office environment to be noticed.

Thank you for answer. I searched in Internet and found same thing about
Toshiba and Inspiron: "When there's CPU activity, it emits a quiet
high-pitched noise. When
CPU activity stops, the noise stops. This doesn't happen in the maximum
power usage mode (brigh screen, fastest clock), and I don't know if there's
a way to turn it off."
It seems to be connected with APM or ACPM idle calls and/or SpeedStep:

Really I have not problem with this sound because it's almost impossible to
hear.

Hi. This is my friend, Jack Shit, and you don't know him.

If it's on the internet, then it has to be true.

Is your CPU clocked at 20kHz or less? That's about the limit of human
hearing.

I don't think CPU is sound source. Maybe internal speakers?

I agree, I don't think it is the CPU itself making the noise, but something
it is doing causes the noise. Whether it is causing interference in the
speaker, power supply or something else doesn't matter, just that what the
CPU is doing at the time determines whether the noise is present is not.

FWIW, in my Inspiron 4000 it does seem to come from where the CPU is in the
notebook, and not from the speakers. It is probably coming from something
in the area of the CPU, from the speedstep causing the power draw to cycle
quickly. IIRC, speedstep runs in 2ms cycles, which would be 500 Hz. I
can't tell what Hz the hissing noise is at, but 500 Hz would be in the
ballpark.

Douglas,

FWIW, my tracking device/mouse creates noise when the volume is too high.

I have an Inspiron 300m, and have a kind of high-pitched buzzing
noise... that might be what you're talking about. It's no big deal
when there's background noise, but when the room gets quiet, the sound
becomes maddening.

From what I can tell, it's endemic to the newer Inspirons and the
prevailing theory on the Dell support forum is that it has to do with
the USB ports. I doubted that theory until I noticed that plugging in
a USB mouse or Busdrive instantly kills the sound. You might want to
try that.

My IBM T40 also has that noise - it's quite variable, and very very very
quiet - but very high pitched. I heard somewhere that it's something to do
with the GPU? And the controller for your mouse apparently makes this noise
too - hence on my laptop it gets louder if I'm dragging something (like an
acrobat document) or generally anything changing the screen.

But do laptops with graphics cards actually have GPUs? I don't have a clue,
but if someone knows...

Duncan.
