Just purchased some Crucial memory from their website ... Their price was
cheaper than any of the chain stores like Best Buy or CompUSA - I was a bit
hesitant. Although I haven't received my memory yet (so I can't tell you if
it works until I get it), they've shipped it out just a few hours after I
ordered it (from tracking). So far I'm pretty impressed.

I've heard from almost every 'expert' that memory all comes from the same
few factories, it's simply branded by different companies and, this I know
from experience, the price can range by as much as $30.00 (presumably for
the same thing). What a shame!

fyi samsung is one of the biggest producers of memory.

Crucial is a top tier memory maker, I have bought nothing else for over 6
years, it is rock solid at a great price. On top of that they have a
lifetime warranty on there modules, and outstanding customer service.

on statistics of the manufacturing technology

they generally use large silicon wafers, they can get anywhere between
10-500 chips per wafer depending on the size of the chip design and the
tracings on the wafer. statistically the inner part of the wafer is of the
best quality and as you get out towards the edges there are more
possibilities for failures or the quality isnt the same. So the inner parts
are sold as Premium quality and can be used at higher rates the the outer
parts. Often different parts of the same wafer goto different companies to
brand as they wish. So Generic ram can be a deal it can be more of a crap
shoot. while premium memory isnt prone to failure, but typically the company
will replace it with no questions if it does

The only problem with Crucial is that they lie outright on their site that
they are manufacturers and have the whole process from chip to complete
product. The DIMMS I ordered from them had Samsung all over chips and even
PCB (Printed Cirquit Board), not Micron (Crucial). At least Kingston knows
how to brand the product properly. Not so with Crucial.

Other than that, the memory they (Crucial) sell is very good. Sometimes it
is better than Kingston, sometimes worse (not much). That's in terms of
speed and generated heat. But it is practically always cheaper.

I`ve never had a problem with Cruial either. I`ve seen lots "name
brand" memory chips, but am a little dubious on their lifetime
warranties. I bought one that ended up being bad and I couldn`even
contact the company! However, I think Crucial has a good reputation.

There are a number of companies that make memory chips. There are even fewer
who make the chips and assemble them onto the small printed circuit boards
technically called memory modules in the form of DIMMs, SODIMMs, SIMMs etc.

Most other memory modules are made by "fabricators" like Kingston, Mushkin,
Corsair, PNY and dozens of others. The best fabricators buy premium quality

Micron does indeed make memory chips and assemble most of their own memory
modules. There are some types of memory that Micron doesn't make any more or
never produced for example 30 and 72 pin SIMMs and some EDO memory. In these
instances, they provide Samsung premium quality modules. If you order by
phone they will usually tell you that the memory is made by Samsung.

I have some DIMMs that I took out of an old Micron dual Pentium Pro PC. The
modules are clearly marked that they were made by Micron but the memory
chips are made by Samsung or Toshiba, I can't remember which one.

Big companies throughout the industry buy from each other.
