- dell 8500 to buy or not?
- Posted by nemo on July 13th, 2003
I want to buy this machine with Pentium 2.0 mobile and GeFoece 64MB.
Is it good deal and what is your opinion about dell?
Do you suggest any other brand with similar perfomance,
Boris

| thanks, I think I will go for it, here in Croatia distributor offers only
1

am

dont

The rule of thumb for LCD displays is that they only look good in their
native resolution. That thought aside I just switched mine to the resolution
you specified (1024 x 768) and it actually looked ok. Mind I did not run
anything graphically intensive at that resolution. The native resolution for
this display is 1680 x 1050. 1024 x 768 would be a waste of screen real
estate in my opinion.

The Compaq X1000 (www.fatwallet.com/forums/ -> hot deals) starting at
~$1050, and still <$1500 with 19xx x 12xx screen is the best deal price
wise. Far cheaper than the Dell, faster ATI 9200 Radeon chipset.

I saw the Compaq X1000 in a store, it has roughly the same form factor as
the Dell Inspiron 8500 (both are made by Compal) and the same screen size
(15.4") and resolution (from WXGA 1280 x 800 to WUXGA 1920 x 1200).
The two screens are similar in being blueish and not white, darkish and not
bright, creamy and saturated like the 15-inch enhanced UXGA screen of the
IBM A30P/A31P, Toshiba Satellite 5100 and 5200 series and the 16-inch UXGA
screen of the Sony GRX series.
The keyboard on the Compaq is somewhat firmer than the flimsy one of the
Dell, which is vertically unsupported beneath. The one on the Compaq flexes
only in the extreme upper right (page up, page down). Thanks to the
Centrino the bottom is cool. There is no pointing stick (that the Dell
has).

I have had one for about 2.5 months now and really like it. 2.2 with
the GForce 64 card.

Nemo,
What "shop" did you go to to try this? I'd like to check out a few of the
Dell systems but they don't have them in retail stores, that I know of at
least.

I am in Croatia and we are very small market so we dont have online sale,
thats why I must buy the item in computer shop but cannot configure model or
if I can it will cost a fortune

I just ordered one of these bad boys the other day. I have read alot
about this keyboard issue but all the other press has been very good.
I did alot of research and this was the best deal (by far) from a name
brand dealer I could find. You can really save some money on a dell
if you just wait for the right deal. I think I got a great deal.
Almost 400$ in rebates.

I agree. I wanted a semi-desktop replacement that could play games(and
would be easy to haul to LAN parties) as well as do business
functions. I ordered mine on 4/28/03 which was only one of two days
that they offered a $450 rebate so you can imagine I was happy about
that. So far it has performed flawlessly.
As for the keyboard, I agree that it's a bit "mushy" but I use an
external flexible keyboard when gaming and don't do a lot of typing
with it anyway. Despite it being "full sized" I find laptop keyboards
a bit weird feeling and if I was going to do a lot of typing I would
use a regular keyboard USBd in to do that(again, it's mostly a desktop
replacement).
Hope they get it to you soon,
Musashi

Thanks for the info. Yea, I can't wait to get it. I keep checking
the status page when I am at work thinking that may speed up the
process. I am not so sure that I believe the status page though. It
says that my computer is already built and tested. I ordered it last
friday.
Anway, I went with the WSXGA. I haven't seen the WUXGA so I couldn't
do it. I am a developer but I figured the WSXGA would be plenty. ANy
thoughts?
Anyone running linux on one of these?

I may be looking to buy this as well since the Inspiron 600m has
lousy (IMHO) wireless battery times. How long do 2 batteries last
on the i8500 while wirelessly online? When will the newer model
come out with the better keyboard? Will Dell replace the keyboards
for existing owners for free? I really didn't want to buy another
huge laptop but I'd like my laptop to be able to last more than
2 hrs when online wirelessly. TIA

see my note to your other post--my short times were using a wireless network
to transfer files--so some of the problem may have been due to hard drive
usage rather than wireless card usage. My 600m came with a second battery
for the optical bay, but have never used it. Suspect doing light work on
the internet--email etc, would get about 3 hrs with the main battery, but
that's only a guess. My friend has an 8500--nice screen, but I sure like
carrying mine better.

OK, 3 hours is acceptable but I was expecting closer to 4 hrs from
a Centrino when online. I forgot that you can swap CDR/DVD
drive for another battery. I am just so used to having 2 batteries
and DVD drive in simultaneously on my i8001. It would be great
if dell released a thin/lite laptop that can hold 2 batteries and
DVD drive concurrently. I am still undecided on which to get. Does
the 600m come with 7200rpm 8mb cache hard drive?
