- Dell Inspiron 1100

Was wondering if anyone had any experience with this laptop and with Dell in
general. Seems like a good price but I have never had a laptop before. Thanks!

My university has a deal with dell so many of the students buy through
them. Dell has made alot of enemies in my department (computer
science) with thier poor customer service and very low quality
laptops. I have heard so many horror stories!
If you have to have a name brand then stay away from HP/Compaq and
Dell. They are at the bottom of the list when it comes to laptops.
I did research for a month before I got my new laptop and Dell was the
first one I crossed off my list. If you looking for a great price on
a laptop you might try looking towards the non-name brands. Sager
machines are great if your looking for a intel P4 processor or
chembook if your looking for the intel M.
I love my chembook! It has out performed many of the name brand
machines. And my vendor was great about answer all question I had
about linux compatability.
Good luck, Carla

I am sorry the truth is not believable enough for you. But it is in
fact the truth. And the truth is that dell is not a company to buy
from.
I am only trying to help others with the information I have obtained
over my month of research when buying my first laptops. I am trying
to pass on the kindness and help people have given me on this forum.
(And just a quick FYI I will NEVER buy a name brand laptop after the
quality I have gotten from my chembook.)

I am on my third Dell machine and have not had any problems with any of
them. I have not had to call Dell about my Inspiron yet, but they were
helpful in a couple of cases with the two desktop machines I had. For the
most part, though, I hardly ever had to call them.
My HP Pavilion is another story. HP support web pages are difficult to
navigate and there's little real help there. The letters are wearing off my
two-year-old keyboard. Fortunately I'm a touch typist and know where the E,
S, D, and C keys are.
And the companies that built my Leading Edge and Columbia computers have
long since disappeared.

I'm not calling you a liar but something doesn't sound right or fit

based on what someone told you. That just doesn't make sense. Why
don't you post on how good your Chembook is and forget advising people
on Dell's where it seems you have no experience?

Hi Carla,
I feel you should wait lil' longer to evaluate the quality/reliability
factor of your Chembook. Any piece of electronics will work good
initially. Otherwise people won't buy them at all.
A product can be rated good when you see it
still going great after a few months of usage or so.
And when you get into trouble, how effortlessly you can come through.
Till that time we all have to wait.
Regards
Rex

I dont' think you read me original post fully. As I said before my
univeristy has a deal with dell so there have been many people who
have bought from them. I am posting on what I have seen and beem told
by MANY other computer scientist in my department who bought through
the university. Dell laptops are a very big topic with people from my
classes because of all the problems.
I am glad that you had a good experince but I am just trying to warn
people of what I have seen. I am just trying to help others where I
can. Besides this is just one persons post, relax LOL

It's not just one person's post. People say stuff all the time and
you have to see iif it's really true. I have a hard time believing
these people who you say have all kinds of trouble. Especially when
the people thaqt I know with Dell's don't have any trouble with them.
I'm sure some really did have trouble in your department but to smear
Dell because some had trouble is silly. As I said, My Sager 5670 gave
me some trouble, but I would still reccomend them to anyone.

Sounds about like Dell in general. Nowadays companies such as Dell
are cutting corners anyway they can. This is definitely the case with
Dell. Personally, I would never buy a Dell computer. I have seen how
these things are designed and its not pretty.

So,
Exactly WHAT is it specifically about the design that's "not pretty" as you
say??
Can you be a bit more specific?
I'm in the market for a notebook and desktop and would like to know what it
is you finnd poorly designed.
Thanks
