What did Dell say when after only one month's use (within
the warranty period) the first battery failed to hold a charge?

Well, this battery is not a dell battery. We figured that just the del
batteries sucked and thought we would try a different one.
Thanks

Well Li-Ion batteries goes downhill fast if they are getting hot. Plus
they are only good for about 500 recharges. Although 500 recharges in a
month is like virtually impossible. Have all four of them have been
purchased from the same place? Were the others from Dell, or Dell brand?

Well the only thing in common is heat and/or 500 recharges. And the
latter is like almost impossible in a month time. The only other thing
is the laptop is draining the battery even when it is powered down. This
Gateway drains about 2% per day if I leave the battery in the laptop. So
it sounds like I would have to recharge it about every 2 months if I
leave it in the laptop without AC power. If I pull it out, about once a
year would probably be okay.
When you run a laptop, it gets hot normally. And Li-Ion batteries hate
heat per sa. So even if it isn't being charged or drained, the heat
itself from the laptop is damaging it. So a lot of us will remove the
battery when we don't need it. This will make the battery last a very
longtime. Some of us has have Li-Ion batteries last 10 or more years by
practicing this. Although I have to admit, if you just get 5 years on a
Li-Ion battery... you are doing just fine.
If you are using battery power everyday and drain the battery every
single day. You are said to get about 500 recharges. So that sounds like
you should get like a year and a half. Well from my experience, it could
be like you get about 6 months worth. Like about 180 recharges. And to
be frank, heavy use of a Li-Ion battery and you only get 180 recharges
isn't all that bad if you ask me.

Hi Bill,
Thank you soooooooooooo much for all the advice. I will remove th
battery when not needed to see if that helps. It does get very very ho
sometimes so that makes sence. I will let you know how it goes. Again
thank you very much. You said you have a Gateway? Are you very happ
with it?

You are welcome. Yes I like my Gateways. Although I think instead of
watching out for manufactures, one should look out for bad models
instead IMHO. As just about all of them has some great models and most
of them has some really bad models.

I have to agree.
My experience with Dell and HP/Compaq has been to stay away from
retail consumer models, and go for something on the business side.
The models found in Bigbox stores seem to have more frequent hardware
issues. But that is just my experience.

Greetings Bill..
Two things to consider:
1. "When you run a laptop, it gets hot normally. And Li-Ion batteries
hate
heat per sa."
It's not, "per sa."
Consider:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Per_se
More specifically:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...E2%80%93Z%29#P
"per se "through itself" Also "by itself" or "in itself". Without
referring to anything else, intrinsically, taken without
qualifications, etc. A common example is negligence per se. See also
malum in se."
2. "Yes I like my Gateways"
You like all your Gateway laptops? If so, this makes sense. Otherwise,
the company does not have an "s" behind it last time I checked.
http://www.gateway.com/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gateway_Computer
Cheers,
Mr. Mentor
If you're from the east coast where folks, for some reason, feel
compelled to put an "s" behind words like, anyway, when it usually
doesn't require it or it wouldn't otherwise be appropriate, you're
excused. I suspect that may be the French/Canadian influence.

Yes I understand, but what is wrong with my use of per sa? They say it
is heat, but I believe it isn't just the heat. As heat alone IMHO isn't
doing the damage. As I believe it is heat coupled while charging that is
really doing the harm. Although I am not totally convinced of it yet.
Yes I have two Gateways. I also have three Toshibas. And typing or
writing the word "Toshibas" always bothers me a lot. As it just seems
wrong to me for some reason. I sometimes spell out "Toshiba laptops" to
get around that feeling. LOL
