Dell Latitude keys jump around or window focuses change
Posted by Yong Huang on September 16th, 2003

I have a Dell Latitude C540/C640 running XP SP 1. When I type fast,
sometimes the cursor suddenly jumps to a different place on screen, to
another paragraph, beginning of the same line, or another text box.
Somtimes the window I'm working in suddenly goes to background and
another window takes focus. Anybody else has this problem?

Sounds like your touchpad "tap to click" is either too sensitive or worn to
where it is almost making contact internally so that vibration causes it to
close the circuit inadvertantly which is like clicking it. Notice where it
occurs and see if it is where your mouse pointer is located while typing.

I have noticed a similar problem with a Dell Latitude CPi (a Pentium II
processor notebook) running RedHat 9 (a GNU/Linux distribution). If I type
fast and some other process requires a lot of CPU time, the key up stroke is
missed and the last key I typed repeats as if I'm holding it down (even
though I'm not). Sometimes keystrokes are missed and erroneous behavior
results.

This could be a kernel issue, but I've seen the same thing on OpenBSD which
uses a different kernel and set of applications. So I don't think this has
to do with the operating system running on the machine, but something about
the hardware. Also the correlation of the CPU being busy (for lack of a
better word) when this occurs, makes me think something beyond the control
of an operating system is adversely impacting the ability to type at full
speed.
