- Direct Connecting Laptop with Desktop?
- Posted by Dwight on December 31st, 2003
I have a laptop running 98SE and a desktop with XP. The laptop has no
CD drive, and I've been told I can Direct Connect with a crossover
parallel cable, and then share the desktop's CD drive. I seem to have
the desktop set-up, but I can't set up the laptop because the Direct
Connection Wizard is not installed, and I need a CD drive for my 98SE
CD to install it.
Can I set this connection up manually?
Is what I've been told correct, that I can map my desktop's CD drive
to my laptop?
Thanks,
Dwight

Can you get your hands on a Zip drive? If so you can copy the Win98 disk to
it and use it to install the direct connection componant. Barring that you
might want to consider one of the old "back pack" external CDROM drives that
used the parallel port (if your USB port is not available.) Here is a link
to an eBay auction that has one. (Just as an example.)

I assume it's got a floppy drive? Just go to add/remove and add DCC, and

work
It is possible, because I have done it myself. There are (networking)
issues involved in connecting between XP and 98se using DCC though,
this page may help with some of them:

(There may also be hardware/bios issues in how XP adresses the LPT port
on the desktop machine, but lets assume you haven't got that problem.)
Oh, and don't expect the drive to be very fast either

Both OSes have networking capabilities. Have you thought about a
simple peer/client network if both laptops have network cards?

When I networked my XP box to Win98SE I used my XP CD in the W98 machine,
but in XP networking wizard there is an option to write a diskette with
files for the other machne.... as I recall.
hope this helps.
