Divided we stand, united we fall!

I've heard that some/all notebooks are shipped with only a single logical
drive on the hard drive.

Has that been your experience?

I would guess that repartitioning the drive might void the warranty.

Do any notebooks offer the option of multiple partitions when purchased?

Pretty much true, IME. I tend to rebuild mine for the partition
scheme I want using as large/fast a drive as I can buy.

Dunno that it voids the warranty, though they may ask you to return it
to it's original configuration if you call their software support.
(They shouldn't, but they may). However, if you can partition the
drive yourself, you are unlikely to want to call for software support.

Not that I know of. if you are really concerned about it, buy the
laptop you want with the smallest/cheapest available hard drive, and
immediately replace it with the big one you really want with your own
partitioning scheme. Keep the old one on the shelf, and pop it back
in for warranty service.

In order to repartition myself, I'd try using Partition Magic, which I've
never before used.

Don't know how well that deals with drives with hidden partitions.

FWIW, I have an IBM T42 which was supplied with a 60 GB drive. I used
PM ver 8 to repartition it. PM it now shows 32.8 GB in the C
partition, 20 GB in the D partition, and 4.3 GB in the "IBM_SERVICE"
partition, which doesn't show in Win Explorer. Does it invalidate the
warranty? I certainly hope not.... I didn't even consider that before
repartitioning because I always repartition large drives. The IBM
partition is at the "end" of the drive, and didn't seem to bother PM
at all.

I've never repartitioned myself, which sounds kind of painful, but I
have repartitioned a number of hard drives with several programs --

BootIt NG (www.BootItNG.com).

For one, BootItNG (or BING, as it's often called) allows you to have up
to 250-some odd *primary* partitions (useful for booting different OS's,
among other things). It also has built-in partition imaging and
restoring, NTFS resizing, etc., etc.

PArtition magic works excellent and is not too complicated to figure
out.. Just read up on it prior, and dont convert C:.. Leave it as is
and create a new drive.
