Dual channel memory
Posted by Barry Watzman on March 2nd, 2006

Anyone know of a utility [preferably free] that actually and explicitly
tells you if a computer which is dual channel capable is actually
running in dual channel memory mode? I will be putting two "different
but similar" memory modules into a Toshiba A105 and want to know if they
are similar enough to run dual channel.

[Different but similar - One module made by Elpida, one by Hynix, but as
far as I can outwardly tell, both have the exact same specs, including
as many of the timing specs as I can identify, and both apparently have
the same internal organization.]

The standard bootup messages that appear just after ram check should
indicate if dual channel memory has been actuated - (on a PC with that
capability).

The latest version of Memtest86+ (version 1.65) does display this
information (whether or not a potentially dual-channel memory system is
actually operating in dual channel mode).

Most laptops (this was a Toshiba A105) do not display any system or
status messages at startup, nor in most cases is there an option to do so.

Yes you are correct.

I was thinking desktop was the same, but as you point out its not.

My mistake.
