Dual Head on Laptops
Posted by Frank Boluk on October 9th, 2003

Hi,

i am looking for a laptop that will allow me to have a dualhead
feature like the ones on Matrox Graphic Cards. I want to be able to
connect a second monitor to the notebook and have my desktop on both
screens. The TV-Out should also work on the second Monitor, so i can
connect any projector to the laptop.
As far as i know there are ATI chipsets that have this feature, but
not all Notebook manufacturers enable it for their products, Is this
correct? I know there are Dell notebooks that have a dualhead feature,
but is this the case with all Dell notebooks? Are there other chipset
manufacturerers that have a feature like that for notebooks?

thanks for your time

Frank

The ThinkPad A30p and A31p do a very nice job of this, both with a second
monitor and TV output.

Most laptops featuring good graphics cards have this function. It is
called dual view. I have an ATI 7500 on a T30 and it works great. You
can move a cursor form one screen to another. Perfect for working with
graphs or text. On one display you have data and on the other one you
can write or do whatever you like. You can even watch movies while
typying. Remember about one thing: the resolution has to be the same
on both displays (maybe someone knows how to overcome this and set
various resolution).

Could this be a limitation of the operating system? Or is it the ATI 7500? I
believe that Windows XP handles the external monitor independently while
Windows 2000 did not. My T40p with a Radeon 9000 FireGL works great with an
external monitor, with different resolutions.

Adam ... Would you mind to share this Dual view configuration ???
I have ATI 7500 32MB on my Compaq Evo610, and have no success to get this
work on Dual monitors. OS I am using is Windows 2000 Pro SP4. Thanks

I have an ancient by todays standards HP, its a P3 at 500mhz, with 16MB
Savage graphics, i can easilly set up the laptop to run at 1024x768, and an
external monitor to 1200xWhatever, but it is a big hit on performance,
keeping both at 1024x768 keeps it happy and still pretty darn fast. Came in
real handy doing HTML coding... would have my code on one screen, and IE
open on the other looking at the document, just change the code, mouse over
and refresh to see if it got the results i wanted, then upload it and access
from another computer, same desk connected to the remote webserver to see if
the asp worked properly. At the time i got this machine ALL of them had
dual head capability, one head was taken already by the display, but the
other was usually a VGA out on the back of the machine, this one does have
TVout, but TVout just absolutely sux, for some reason it will let me do
different resolutions from vga but when i go to TV i either have to go to
the TVs resolution of the laptops resolution(meaning i have to mouse all
over the place on the TV, and it won't let me send a second signal to the
TV, alli can send to the TV is a clone of whats on the primary display....
I can't believe there are laptops out there now that don't have VGA such a
valuable plug for business and such, expecially with a projector....

are you running on the T30?

My A30p has the ATI 7000, and Windows XP can set the two displays to
different resolutions. You just use the Display control panel, Settings tab
and select the display you want to adjust.

I am running Win 2000 Professional on a T30 (P4 1,8 Ghz with 256 Mb
RAM and an ATI 7500 with 16 Mb Video RAM). I haven't tried WIN XP on
my T30 as i don't feel like spending $ is worth it- everything works
fine. I ran Win XP on my previous notebook- Compaq Presario but it
didn't support the dual head function at all, so I have no experience
with running dual head on Win XP. it's interesting what you wrote,
that it may be OS dependent. I asked one specialist- so he claims and
I have no reason not doubt his knowledge and he told me, taht the
resolution has to be the same, because on the card there si only one
chip responsible for transmitting graphics to the screen (this is
called DAC).

The configuration on your EVO should be the smae as it also uses the
ATI chipset and drivers. Right clicj on the desktop, choose
Properties, then settings from the menu, then advanced. You will
eneter the ATI setup. Choose Displays. You wil see monitor, lcd and tv
bars. You must first connect your external display. Click on the lcd
and the external display. Both will be highlighted. The lcd shoul be
the primary display. There will be four small quadrats- options of
copying what is displayed on the lcd on the external display. Two of
them are for dual head. You can choose id your virtual desktop extends
to right or down- by moving your mose cursor right or down. That
should work.

That is all i can do right now, because my second display is some 20
km form where i am now so I have no chance of checking it. That should
however work. Try to post this question on to the group. I may not be
the most qualified person right here- I am quite sure I am not.
Computers are even harder to understand than women. You do everything
to please them and they still sometimes are in a bad mood and
unwilling to cooperate.
Best regards

I don't have a machine with an ATI 7500, so I don't know for sure about that
chip.

I do know that both the ATI Rage Mobility 128 in my A21p and the ATI
Mobility Radeon 7000 in my A30p support a different resolution on the
external monitor when running Windows XP. I do it all the time on both of
them, typically to run a projector at a lower resolution while keeping the
LCD at 1600x1200. The ATI 7000 will even run an external monitor at
2048x1536 independently of the LCD resolution.
