Eratic battery and guage
Posted by Salvador Freemanson on August 18th, 2003

Some months ago the time I could use my laptop on battery fell to
under 3 hours (it was over four hours when new). OK, I thought, it's
starting to get old and I took to taking the battery out when I was
using the laptop on mains.

Then last week battery capacity suddenly dropped to zero. There was
still a little juice in it, as it was enough to put the laptop into
standby when I switch to batery, but the guage showed zero.

So I took to using the laptop on mains without the battery, then put
the battery in when I want to take the computer to another room, which
switches it immediately to standby, then connect the mains again to
get it out of standby.

I figured that one of the cells in the battery must be defective (it's
a Li-Ion battery) but the rest of the battery is enough to run the
computer on standby.

Then this morning the guage showed full charge. I used the computer on
battery to see what would happen. It's been running for nearly two
hours now. For the first one and a half hours the guage showed 100%
charge. Then it suddenly dropped to 31%, where it's been stuck for the
last twenty minutes. I'll just put the mains back in now before it
suddenly drops to standby.

Any ideas anyone.

I've rebooted. The battery guage (the one on small LCD status
display, not the one on the screen) is flashing on and off, something
it has never done before. The guage on the screen shows charging,
with the state of charge as 0%.

my Gateway Solo2100 behaves this way. Won't charge the battery.
I can recharge the battery externally and it runs the computer just
fine. I can't tell if it's the battery of the computer that's hozed.
