- External floppy disc drives won't work on Toshiba 415CS Satellite
- Posted by Doug Dornbos on September 29th, 2007
Hi all
Sorry about my previous post ... the dyslexia flared up.
I have a Toshiba 415CS Satellite where the external floppy disc
(A:drive) shows up in Windows but the drive itself doesn't work. The LED
light on the drive itself does not come on. I have a second floppy drive
and it too fails to light up or work.
Can anyone steer me towards a troubleshooting guide for this? or can
someone lead me through it? ideas anyone?
Thanks
Doug

There is a floppy port on the left side of the machine, but it only
works with a Toshiba brand floppy drive with a matching port (Toshiba
used two different kinds of external floppy drive ports).
If you have the proper model of Toshiba drive and port, then either the
port or the floppy is likely bad.

thanks Barry
yes, I have two of the right Toshiba drives with the matching port. is
there a convenient way to test the port to see if the drive is getting
power etc.?

Try to boot from the floppy drive. Go into setup and set the machine so
that the floppy boots before the hard drive, put a disk (preferably
bootable) into the drive and restart the computer. This eliminates all
operating system and software variables. If the drive doesn't try to
boot, something is seriously wrong. If it tries but fails (with a known
good bootable disk), something is [less seriously] wrong.
If the LED is coming on, the drive is getting power.
Most likely cause is two bad drives (one doesn't read, the light on the
other one doesn't even come on)

thanks Barry.
I tried that too with both drives and a bootable disk ... no luck.
