Hard Drive clicks in my laptop
Posted by Poorav on September 9th, 2003

I have a Sony Vaio PCG-FX370. The specs of the machine are P-III,
1Ghz, 256MB RAM, 20 Gig HD. The bios is a Phoenix bios ver. RO223U0.
It has Win XP home Edition

When i start my laptop, within 2-3 secs. my HD starts to click. It
doesn't stop. and ofcourse my computer does not boot. The only way i
can boot is to go to bios and change the primary IDE setting to auto,
which always reverts back to 'none' when i shut down the laptop. So
right now my morning ritual is to start the computer (it starts to
click), go to the bios, change ide setting to 'auto' and save bios
changes. (the computer reboots and my computer starts, sometimes i
need to go through this cycle twice or thrice). If i switch off the
computer and then restart I WILL have to go through the entire cycle
again. Now i know the bios battery is fine becuase the time is
retained and i just replaced the battery.

Has anybody experienced this problem before, or have any idea of what
i can do.

Thank you
Poorav

hi, sounds like you need a new hd, when you boot up the hd gets stuck in a
loop and can't process the necessary next step. if your bios reverts to
"none" than it is not able to identify or see the drive.
