- How do docking stations power laptops?

Through the A/C port?
I have a bad A/C port and am wondering if I can supply power to my
laptop by some other means. Technicians tell me I have to replace the
mother board in order to fix my A/C port.

No, usually through the docking connector on the bottom of the laptop.
The power connector is normally bypassed completely.

The only laptops I've had with docking stations haven't had an AC port per
se. They've had an external 'brick' which connects to the mains with a LV DC
output cable which plugs into the laptop. When using the docking station,
the DC cable plugs into *that* instead, and powers the laptop through the
docking connector.

I've never seen a laptop with A/C input. They all use DC from an
external convertor box. I suppose you mean the power input.
The docking station on my Compaq EVO has an input for the power supply
unit. I.e. with the docking station in place, I can connect the power
unit either to the laptop, or to the docking station to power the whole
thing.
Which laptop do you have?

There were lots of old laptops that took a direct AC connection rather than
a power transformer connection.
Old Compaq Armada machines are one example that comes to mind. Obviously,
they weighed a ton.

OK. Fair enough.
So how were they powered when connected to a docking station - or were
docking stations not available for them?

Sorry, I don't recall, even though there's one sitting on the floor here in
my office.
IIRC, there was a blocking plate on the dock that prevented having the
laptop directly connected to AC and the unit got its power from the dock.
Could be a false memory however.

That's the case with my wife's Compaq, which is very similar to your HP.

No, most of them work the opposite way as they are usually a USB or PC Card
connected device and draw their power from the laptop.

is what you want. Widely available on eBay.

Before we go too much further, what is the make and model of your
laptop. If for example, if you have a dell Latitude, you can dock, and
power it on anyway, despite the broken a/c port. But not all laptops
can dock.
The next question: do you really have to replace the whole motherboard
to fix a broken a/c jack. Not usually. It can often be resoldered or
replaced. Except many shops don't do soldering for various reasons,
but ask around.
