Normally removing partitions means you lose everything on them. Although
there are third party software that will save them (most of the time).
Thus it is always best to make a backup on everything first just in case
if you are worried about losing anything.

Paragon Partition Manager 9.0 ($39.95)

Partition Logic (free)

In that case delete the other ones (Windows XP can do this too) and just
resize the OS to fill it all up with one of the third party ones. I am
not sure, but I think Paragon Partition Manager will work as a trial too
and times out like after 30 days.

If you want to delete disk O, go ahead. If you want to merge, Paragon
Hard Disk Manager 8 should be able to handle that. Under Paragon Hard
Disk Manager 2005 (aka v6) it is under Wizards. Probably the same under
Paragon Hard Disk Manager 8.

I've had good luck with the live gparted disk. Never had a problem
changing/resizing partitions.

But I have had problems with WINDOWS 2000 or later.
I've never been able to cause the problem deliberately,
but I finally gave up with plug-in hard drives on those
operating sytems.

The symptom is that after adding/removing hard drives==partitions, the OS
boots half way, then decides that it can't find the drive it's booting from.
I hypothesize that the BIOS assigns drive letters according to ancient
DOS rules. The OS starts to boot, then loads it's own tables.
At that point, the OS pulls the rug out from under itself and it locks up.

The lesson here is, "Back up everything you want to save."

And I don't mean, "save the files." I mean back it up so you can
restore a partition image. MS will do everything it can to prevent
you restoring files...you're a pirate, you know...well...in this case,
you actually are...
Gparted should help you keep the flag flying...

check the content of the extra partitions (there might be interesting
things!) and delete what I don't need on each of them.

Keep in mind it is not a bad idea to have several partitions, a common
scheme being C for the OS, D for programs and E for data. The fact there
are several partitions only has advantages in terms of safety and order,
and NO drawback.

If you insist on having only one partition, I do not believe any of the
paying programs that have been mentioned will allow you to do that with
their trial version. I think Bill and I had an exchange on the subject a
while ago and that I mentionned that point.

But there is a perfect solution to your problem ... and many other
problems a computer user will run into: visit
http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd
and make a bootable cd.

Once you have booted this cd, choose partition utilities, and among the
choices, for a 40G disk, I would recommend you select Partition Magic,
which is the easiest to use. For a much larger disk, I would advise Disk
Director or Paragon, but in your case, Partition Magic has my vote.

Deleting the extra partitions and extending the C one to the full size
of your hard disk will preserve the OS, but check carefully the content
of all partitions, some systems come with C and D, plus a recovery
partition, so bluntly deleting D and the recovery partition (if it
exists) can have unpredictable consequences.

I would suggest you delete only one partition at a time and check the
behavior of the machine. Partition Magic has better chances to recover a
deleted partition if you deleted only one at a time.

All this may sound confusing, but I am just saying that based on the
little info you gave us, it is difficult to be 100% sure your machine
will work normally if you delete all extra partitions without a thorough
analysis of their content.

Regards

All this is free, and Hiren CD will save your bacon more than once, I
can promise you that.

Regards

John,
I went to that page but see no link to 'download the cd image". Should
there be ? or is this a cd one needs to purchase ?
Thanks,
Bobb

Even though Hiren's Boot CD contains free software and
abandonware, which are still copyrighted, from the DOS era, it
also contains a significant amount of unlicensed proprietary
software; therefore, Hiren's Boot CD is considered warez. This
makes the entire disc illegal in most jurisdictions. Hiren no
longer offers a download link to the disc image.

Actually the commercial software on that CD are full trial versions.
So in theory they are legal. But if you like them and want to continue
to use them with a clear conscious, then by all means pay the man.

You need only look at the list of included software to know that a fair

included, I find a number of commercial products being offered as well.
