- HP Pavilion ZE4400 problems.
- Posted by Jukka Andersson on October 12th, 2003
Hi people,
I am getting laptop for audio use and now testing HP Pavilion ZE4407EA
which is basicly AMD XP2200+ based computer with ALI chipset and pretty
decent specs like 15", DVD, CDRW, Firewire, USB1.1, 30Gb, 256mb...
But now I have this problem which appears time to time but not all the time.
Display or something nearby seems to make annoying whining sound while
graphics on screen does change a lot. this sound goes also to my usb1.1
based emagic emi 2/6 sounddevice which otherwise is very highquality.
powercord plugs next to usb so I thought that this noise leaks to usb or
perhaps its just does effect to every power on this computer.
display is little too slow for my taste but i can live with it. but when
adjusted to lowest contrast as possible display does flicker and I guess
this has something to do with this whining sound.
as someone told me it might come from displays inverter circuit, what do you
people think and if is it easy to repair or do they change whole computer to
new one?
This is only about 1 month old so there is warranty left and I guess they
have onsite service for this product.
Is this very common problem and how does ALI chipset laptops perform on pci
bandwith use, is there been problems
This laptop has ATI Radeon Mobile graphics chip which is good but can this
make problems like this while being so powerfull and power it self is little
short on laptops.

I've got a ze4278 with a mobile Celeron 2.0. My experience with noise
comes when i put the laptop in max battery setting in power managment.
The noise is a very, very low modemlike noise when doing work on the
computer. I think it comes from the throttling of the system. In max
battery the system is reducing it's clock speed as much as possible,
some times as low as below 500 mhz on battery.

When you enter the properties of power managment you'll see above the
settings for minutes to turn off screen etc. a drop down box containing
about 6 different preset conditions. If my ze4278 is set to "max
battery" setting, very low electrical/electronic noises can be heard. If
I use any of the other settings the computer is quite. If you experience
the same, try to use another preset like always on.
