- IBM T Series: Wirelss and Video
- Posted by oryx on August 19th, 2003
I am looking to buy one of the IBM T40 notebook series soon. I will be
using the laptop away from home for moderately sized graphics in Photoshop
and CorelDraw from time to time, as well as the usual e-mail, web and office
apps, but not games of any kind. I have a couple of questions:
I seem to be able to configure a T40 on the Web site more cheaply with the
built-in Intel chip activated, rather than the IBM a/b wireless with
Bluetooth. Is there a noticeable difference in build or reception between
the two? I have read some messages urging the avoidance of the Intel
wireless.
Also, is there a such a big difference between a well-configured T40 and the
much more expensive T40P models? Can the difference in video card memory
make such a large difference in cost?
Thanks for any thoughts and experiences with the T40's.

I just got my T40 today and I love it.
I am very picky about my laptops, I recently sent back an Acer 803,
which was a superb notebook, just because I didnt like the ergonomics.
This laptop is not for kids or people on a budget, its for business
people who beat the hell out of their laptops and travel a lot. If you
dont travel much you can save money by getting a flimsier, heavier
laptop.
The build of the thinkpad is just so much more robust then anything
else out there. Its like a little tank. I drive a 2000 BMW 540i, this
is the first notebook I have owned which compares to a beemer (they
smell the same new). The similarities come in the feel of every
switch, button, and hinge on the unit - all of them respond very
firmly and decisively, but at the same time seem indestructable.
Definitely skip the Intel wireless, it is lame. My friend has it in
his Dell. The T40 can be configured with the Cisco Aironet, which is
arguably the finest radio made. It is so powerful it is the first
802.11b device I have used which actually interferes with my cordless
2.4ghz phone, but Im not complaining.
