IBM Thinkpad T40 Fan Issue
Posted by Daniel on October 13th, 2003

Does anyone have a fix for the intermittent fan noise in the TPT40?
Will it be fixable with a future bios upgrade?
Does all recently shipped T40's have the fan/noise problem?
Is the fan supposed to be on at all times?

I also have a new T40 (built in September, country of origin China) that
exhibits the same problem. A friend of mine bought a T40 at the same time
as me (his machine is only 3 serial numbers different) and it also has this
problem. I've updated the BIOS and ECP to the latest versions, no luck
there.

I'm not sure what you mean by "fan supposed to be on at all times" though...
My fan only comes on after some time of being used, usually with heavier
usage. If I'm using it in powersaver mode on battery then usually it's not
on.

The only thing I can suggest you do is call IBM support and try to get them
to escalate (or even acknowledge) the problem. I've already made one call
to them, will have to make another one today.

I'm strongly convinced that the problem is fixable via a BIOS upgrade, as it
seems that the program controlling the fan is a little wonky.

On a semi-unrelated note - does anyone else have a T40 whose keyboard
"beeps" at them with certain key combinations? Not a Windows-ish "beep" but
the actual computer itself beep... For example hold down the "d" and "e"
keys together, then hit the "a" key. Did it beep at you? (With the sound
turned on).

Thank you for your answer.

In an earlier thread it is mentioned that the fan is always on:

Thats why I was wondering.

I think so too. Thats why I find it rather strange that a company like big
blue has not come up with a solution yet...

My desktop computer (homebuilt with msi-motherboard) beeps if I hold two
keys, for example the keys 'd' and 'e', and then also hold 'a'. It is the
built in speaker that beeps. Maybe to notify the user of stuck keys?
