- IBM X40 USB CDROM ???
- Posted by Matt Milne on February 23rd, 2005
Hi, I am thinking of getting an IBM X40 but I am unsure as it doesn't
come with an optical drive. This could cause various problems. Does
anyone know if you can get a usb cdrom/dvdrom drive for it and will this
boot from startup with a cd in? IBM brobably do one but I would like to
know if it works first as no-where seems to say whether they work on
boot? A cheaper substitue would be nice too. Also has anyone got any
issues or know of any with the X40 before I buy one
Cheers for the help,
Matt

Matt,
I have the IBM Slim USB Multi Burner that works (you can boot from it and
write DVD-R/W)
The main drawback for me is that it will not read DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD+R DL
discs

Where did you get it from, as the X40 I am looking at doesn't come with
one. Hmmm I am pleased it boots from the device as I don't want to rely
on the ibm hidden partition. I wonder if other USB devices allow u to
boot from them, as normally they might require drivers within windows? I
am not sure about this. The bios definitely has boot from usb cdrom or
usb floopy but I don't know if this is with only ibm ones???

Yes, I'm using a random usb2 cd/dvd drive with my x40 and it boots
from the drive just fine. I did my OS install (Fedora Core 3
GNU/Linux) that way.

Whaaaat? Is that documented or is your burner just defective? It's
bizarre to hear that the drive has trouble reading those discs.

Any chance you could tell me where you got it from and how much it cost
and what brand?

Will this usb2 cd/dvd drive power from the x40 without a power cube?

It's a Mad Dog Multimedia DVD burner, $149.95 from CrapUSA. I don't
recommend it at the moment because while it reads and writes CD's just
fine and reads DVD's just fine, at least under Linux, the DVD's it
writes won't read back. The manufacturer gave me an RMA number but I
haven't sent it back yet. There are tons of similar units available
though. If you want to buy online, I've generally been happy with
zipzoomfly.com.

No, it's a full sized 5.25" cd/dvd drive in a USB2 enclosure. It's
not terribly portable. However, it doesn't need a power cube. It has
a power supply inside the box so you just plug it into the wall with a
normal power cord without a cube.

Do you really mean READS and not WRITES? They had a model that will
WRITE dvd-r but not dvd+r. It wont' READ +r either??? That's the
part that's amazing me.
They have a new one now that will supposedly write -R, +R and +/- RW
including +DL (I don't know about -RAM). I hope that one will read
everything it writes.

I have two generic (read dirt cheap!) external CD drives that I've used to
BOOT client's X40s with and there were no problems.
As far as I've seen to date, the entire X40, T4X and G4X series of machine
will BOOT from anything you can attach to the USB ports, including memory
keys.
