- Increase audio volume?
- Posted by Steve on December 7th, 2004
I think there's a product that will allow use of laptop headphones
thru another audio device, to get increased volume. Not sure what
it's called, though. Any ideas? Thanks!

Its called a splitter. It has an audio headphone plug spliced onto a
standard Red/White (Left/Right) plugs.
You could probably make your own, but radioshack does sell them.

It's called an amplifier. There are many but you probably want a
small headphone-specialised one. Take a look at www.headroom.com and
www.headwize.com

To boost the output from your notebook use AC3 Filter(free):
http://ac3filter.sourceforge.net/
Or the WoW Thing($30):

Might help but no software plug-in can increase the power output of
the wimpy amps on most soundcards.

Thanks, found the equivalent at Radio Shack. It says the headphones
should have 16 ohm impedance. Any idea what the impedance is on the
headphones they give you on airplanes?

Thanks Andrew. Looked at the page, trying to figure out just what
this does for the volume level. ?

It gives you an equalizer. Many movies are not setup right and this
gives you gain and many other adjustments. It works perfectly on two
of my ultra lights. Out of 20 movie ripps maybe one has the gain set
properly. So yes, in that case this control panel won't help with the
volume. But it can still be great for cutting hiss or too much base on
a small speaker.
