Which laptop - advice needed please
Posted by WLF on July 22nd, 2003

I am looking for a laptop with the following specs:

- P4 (Mobile or non mobile) 2 Ghz or greater
- 512 mb ram
- 40Gb or greater hard drive (must be 5400 rpm)
- infra red
- 15" screen
- International warranty included or at a reasonable cost. This is
because I am having a friend purchase it for me in the USA and
bringing it back to New Zealand. I think this will exclude Dell - from
what I can tell they require you to purchase a 3 year NBD warranty to
qualify for International warranty.
- must be readily available in the USA

Graphics - I would prefer at least 32mb dedicated graphics ram,
however I'm not sure if I really need this - the impression I have
gained is that it only matters for games, of which I will hardly be
playing, any commments?

Lastly I want to spend a max of $US2000, preferably less.

The laptop will be used for development work using VC++, graphics work
in Photoshop and other general use.

The Compaq Evo800v is the best I have found so far - 2Ghz Pentium
M/512mb/40gb 5400 rpm/32mb gfx for a bit less than $US1800 exc
taxes/shipping

This would probably do the trick, although I would prefer a non mobile
P4. Is anyone aware of any other machines I should consider?

Thanks

Just curious, why do you prefer non-mobile P4? If my understanding is
correct, the mobile chip produces much less heat and requires less energy -
both very important traits for laptops.
As for the Evo, I can only comment that I presently have an Evo n600c and am
very happy with it. (I have owned several brands/models of laptops.)

Mainly because I am more concerned with performance than battery life
- the laptop will be plugged in mosst of the time it is in use.

Acer Travelmate 803 is an excellent laptop with one exception, its external
graphics are shocking. Acer are still deying openly that this is a problem.
I am sending mine back and am currently looking at the new Asustek L5000C
which is a Pentium 4 M 2.6Ghz. I amhaving trouble finding a high end laptop
that will give me the performance I require as a desktop replcement.

Mathias,
Did you have an opportunity to try the NX7000?

I'm looking for a new laptop and just bought a
Sony Vaio GRV6161S which is a total disaster.

Is the NX7000 silent?
I mean - and this is very important to me - is
the fan noisy???
It is a Centrino so my guess is that it is pretty silent.

I had an HP Omnibook 6000 and was enchanted by it.
Very solid, very powerfull at that time and almost always
silent (both the fan and the hard disk).

Thanks for any information you could provide.

Sincerely,
Steve JORDI

OK, I left this one out hoping it will be fixed soon. The external
out seems to be a little tiny problem that Acer won't admit in
general; depending on who you get on support lines you'll get a more
honest answer. Latest update I have is that Taiwan is working on it. A
reliable German computer magazine tested the external graphics on some
of the lastest laptops; summing up all tested devices weren't
overwhelming at all. So don't know ...
But I need a acceptable external out, so I'll wait to see if Acer can
fix it soon or I'll have a look at the NX7000.

Recently I read about the NX7000 as an alternative. Haven't had time
getting close to it yet. It's said to be out in Germany within the
"next" weeks, mid August or so. But it's already available in the US
as X1000. Have a look at http://www.x1000forums.com/ , first
impressions from US users.

Heck, for what you're doing, even a Toshiba 1135 series that were
blowing out for $800 recently with 2Ghz Celeron, 15" screen, 40GB HD,
etc. would do perfectly fine for your tasks.

Keep in mind that one a laptop, the processor doesn't do as much for
speed because the rest of the components are slow. You'd have to spend
well into the $2000-3000 range to get a laptop that's significnatly
faster (we're talking 100+%) than this one.

I'd save the money and just get something like this or the Compaq X1000
(www.fatwallet.com/forums/ -> going for ~$1050+). The Compaq has a nice
15.4" wide-screen that's perfect for programming and graphics editing
because the extra space lets you layout the palettes without
overlapping, esp. if you get the higher resolution screens.

And what is with Your performance?

Alway the noise of the fan makes stupid,
reduces concentration, leeds to more
programing failures.

In what resolution?
I tested only with a beamer with SVGA 800x600 maximum
and it was very good

He asked for a notebook,
not for such a pseudo "notebook" with
a desktop CPU.

Somebody has to be mad to pay
so much money for such an unuseable pseudo
with only 768 pixel height TFT

What a nonsens. At Raytracing, the 1.7 GHz Pentium-M is as fast
as the 3 GHz P4.

You can not compare a notebook with a pseudo "notebook"
