Hi,
I have a IBM thinkpad T20 , warranty has expired
currently when I try to boot the light just blinks and does nothing,
i have tried to switch on with ac power (removing battery) the same
thing
happens.
what could be the reason for this type of failure any idea?
can i use laptops monitor as desktops monitor(not this one) if yes how?
regards
tc

Most likely there has been a significant power supply failure on the
laptop's motherboard.
No, you cannot use the monitor as a desktop monitor.
Your options are to fix it or to sell it as-is on E-Bay. You might be
surprised at how much you can get for it, even though it doesnt' work
(it has a good screen, hard drive, CD, keyboard, external power
supply/charger, etc.)
One of the "sell it as-is" options it to "part it out" (take it apart
and sell the parts separately).

If you call IBM support they can usually tell you what is wrong even
though you dont have a current warranty. The light blinks in in
different patterns for different problems. If you tell them the
pattern, they can usually tell you what is wrong.

It's definitely worth a try, but recently I have seen very few laptops
that would not turn on just because the CMOS battery was dead (this was
far more common about a decade ago).
As someone else pointed out, the IBM laptops will often flash a specific
error code in their lights that can be looked up in the service manual,
and that's what I'd do first. The CMOS battery may be proprietary, hard
to get and expensive.

The point is, you have no idea what you are talking about and post
anyway.
The CMOS/RTC battery is $13.00 from IBM parts.
The exact failure he describes is common on the IBM T series from a
dead CMOS battery.

I am not familiar with this specific model, but I service laptops quite
a bit (although usually not IBM .... mostly Toshiba) and it is very
unusual, IN GENERAL, for a laptop not to even turn on because the CMOS
battery is bad. You may be right about this model, but across the
spectrum of laptops, it's not common.
