laptop screen gets hot in a corner
Posted by Rémi on May 17th, 2007

Hello,

I have a 7 years old SONY PCG-FX501 laptop.
Since a few days, the screens get very very hot in the lower left
corner. So hot that it gets black over a square cm area.

Is there something special I can do apart from waiting for the screen
death ?
Thanks.
Rémi.

Aside from shopping for a new screen? Not really.

You could try to rig a heat sink to dissipate the heat, but:

1) It would be ugly as sin
2) It probably wouldn't work very well, or for very long
3) Red Green may want you as a guest on his show.

At 7 years old, the repair cost may outweigh the replacement cost, you
might get money for the parts of the laptop (besides the screen).

The problem might not be the screen, it might be the inverter (in fact,
more than likely, this is the case).

I'd stop using the computer, open it up and find the problem. If the
plastic melts or becomes discolored, that's a tough problem to deal
with. Tougher than replacing an inverter.

the board may be going bad or have a loose high resistance contact. Do
not play with when there is any power in system.

There are many causes of this. On cause can be the Cold cathode fluoresent
tube itself. This is a grossly misnamed device as the cathodes get very hot
indeed. One of the tube failure modes as they wear out is that the cathodes
can get much hotter than normal, and this affects the LCD screen near it.
