- LG LW70 Express boot problem
- Posted by kritzner @/bei logicway ./punkt de on January 3rd, 2008
After replacing the original builtin HDD with a new one the notebook
does not boot any more from CD/DVD or network. Instead of starting
from CD the display blanks after BIOS summary and does a hard reset
after a little waiting time.
The original builtin HDD is a FUJITSU MHT2080AT, the new one is a
Hitachi HTS541616J9AT00. The correct boot sequence is selected. With
the original HDD starting from CD is possible, so the CD drive works
and the CD is functional. The new HDD itself is not defective, in
other configurations it works perfectly.
Did anyone experience and solve similar behaviour (preferrably with an
LG notebook)?
Thanks for help

Did you make the hard drive "active"?

Sounds like you need to visit the BIOS Setup and setup the device boot
order to me. When you turn on the laptop and watch the screen, it will
tell you what key(s) to hit to enter the Setup. If Windows starts
loading, you missed that option. If you computer shows a graphic instead
of text when booting up, try tapping the ESC key to switch it to text.

Thanks for your answer, but the boot order is ok. The sequence is CD
before HDD. With the original HDD it boots from CD. But the error
occurs directly before CD boot should start.

Not at the moment, but I failed with start and installation from CD
although the correct boot order in BIOS is set. HDD partitioning and
activation should be only necessary if starting from HDD, I believe.
If I'm lucky this is the next step ;-).

What error? Anyway it sounds like maybe the jumper on the HD is set in
the wrong position (master/slave/cable select). Hard to say which is the
right position. Maybe you can check what the old one was set at.

I want to start (and later to install) from CD. This works with the
original HDD but not with the new one for some reason. The BIOS
recognizes CD drive and also the new HDD correctly. The jumper (no
jumper) stands at "cable select", I'll try to start in master mode
once again.

Well it is possible that the correct choice is to set it to slave as
well. Especially if the CD is using the same controller (most likely)
and it is already set to master.

It is already master (no jumper present), same as the original HDD.
The CD/DVD is slave. So jumpering is not the solution (unfortunately).

Well I have never seen this myself, but I have heard stories from others
here. And they say that laptops designers don't follow the rules and
take liberties that isn't allowed on desktops. And they have told me
that you can't follow what would make sense in regards to the jumper
settings on a laptop HD. So I believe it would be worthwhile to try all
possibilities.
Btw, does the screen when you first turn on the laptop, show the new HD
installed? Also does the Setup show it as well? Also you still have the
old HD right? Does it still operate? Is this just a HD upgrade to a
larger one? If so, how do you plan on putting an OS on it? Remember the
best place to get the drivers for the new OS is from the old HD itself.
The free DriverBackup does this nicely I am told. I use the registered
versions of Driver Genius and Driver Magician myself.

host adapter and the drive don't match fully.
I'm using Linux (also since over 2 years on the old HDD) that brings
all necessary drivers and autoconfigures perfectly (http://
www.archlinux.org).
Thanks for your support and interest.
