Looking for 17" widescreen laptop
Posted by Jepp on November 25th, 2003

I'm in the market for a laptop (my first). I've decided to go with the 17"
widescreen for the fact that I will be using it to watch dvd movies/tv
(tuner), work (writing reports), and entertainment (games), and browsing the
Internet via wireless (already have USRobotics 5410 pc card for wireless
connection so don't need built in wireless in laptop). I've been looking at
the Sager 4780, but have just found out about the Sager 8790 due out first
of the year of '04. Leaning heavily on waiting for that system to debut.

I am concerned about noise from the fans, though. My family will be using
it as well and if the cooling fans are constantly running it might be too
distracting if someone is trying to read or watch tv (let alone sleep).
Anybody have one of the Sager 17" systems and know how loud they are and if
a cooling device would help limit fan activations?

I know there are other 17" systems available (Dell 8600, and Gateway
675XLb). Anybody have any input on any of these systems and their noise
level, design, quality?

Please respond via newsgroup as my hotmail account always fills up with SPAM
and messages get lost (hate spam).

Thanks, Jepp

The Dell 8600 is a 15.4" widescreen, not 17".

I realized that after I went back to their site. Been at it all day looking
for a laptop.

Thanks for the correction,
Jepp

Hi Jepp,

You can Google my review on the HP Pavilion zd7010us, but I will give you the short version. The screen is a 17" WXGA (1440 *
900) display. It looks very good. A screen though is only as good as the video card that drives it. This machine uses a 64MB
nVidia GeForce4 440 Go with 64MB of DDR VRAM. I've only had the computer for a week, but I have watched a couple of videos
(X-Men and Matrix), and they played back flawlessly. A couple of nights ago, I downloaded the 3d-Shooter Enclave and it rendered
beautifully. I have also tried UT2003 and it played just as well.

You can look at the options at; http://tinyurl.com/vxeg .

I used to favor Compaq's, now I tend to go with the best feature/price. The version I bought, cost me $2,000US retail. A bag to
carry it in cost me another $65.

Best Buy and CompUSA both have them on display. Before you go with a lesser brand name, I would check it out.

Ciao . . .
C.Joseph
