- making the backlight last?

I know I can get more backlight and battery life by turning down the
backlight using the keyboard controls, but if I go into the video card
properties and turn down the gamma, will that also give me more backlight
and battery life?
Thanks,
Richard

No.
The backlight produces a certain amount of light.
The display lets more or less of it through in patches, to make
pretty pictures.
Changing the gamma just changes the amount of light the LCD lets
through.
In short, it probably won't have any effect at all.

How about the brightness you control with the keyboard (on the two laptops I
have used you press fn and then one of the F# keys)?
Thanks,
Richard

While what you say is a correct description of how an actual image on
the screen is produced, and your comments relative to gamma are correct,
the backlight brightness can, in fact, itself als be varied on most
laptop models, and reducing the brightness will increase both the
backlight life and the battery life.

That controlls the brightness of the backlight, and the backlight draws
more power when it's brighter.
I don't think any laptops do it by varying the darkness of the LCD, too
complex, and would ruin contrast at low brightnesses.
