Need backlight lamp
Posted by Barry Watzman on September 27th, 2005

Anyone know where I can find a backlight lamp (the actual CCFT tube ...
ideally with the correct wiring harness attached, but I'm desparate) for
a Toshiba 490XCDT, using a Sharp LQ13X023 LCD panel?

Thanks

You might contact these people; they have been very good for most of my
parts requirements for older Toshiba and newew Sony laptops.

Interestingly, there is no reference to this laptop on their dropdown
product list. ??

Actually, I had found it there on my own (look under 490CDT; the 490XCDT
is a 490CDT with an XGA LCD panel). They have it and they have the best
price I've seen ... about $47. Unfortunately, that's too much, you can
sometimes buy entire laptops (with a working backlight) for that much
(or less, sometimes a lot less, like $12.50 that I paid for this one
(the seller didn't know the backlight was bad)). Digikey has bare lamps
for about $10, and I cut the wiring harness off the old one before
throwing it out (it was broken). But while $10 is acceptable, they have
a $25 minimum order, also I don't know the proper dimension to order.

It's unlikely you'll be able to find the whole assembly, with end caps
and wire and connectors and all. Those things are all over the place in
terms of varriation.

I believe that the lamp size in a 13.3" is AROUND 2mm x 270-280mm.
Since you threw the old one away you may never know for certain.
lcdpart.com has a 2x270 lamp, but I dont like their lamps, they're weak
and break easy. jkllamps.com has a 2x 277 lamp, which they sell through
Digi-Key, along with the end caps you may need:
http://tinyurl.com/3ondr for like half a dollar.

Hope some of this helps. I know DigiKey does small orders, they just
charge and extra 5 for 'handling'.

Well, actually, the whole assembly does exist, it's Toshiba p/n
P000253680, and sparepartswarehouse.com does list it for about $47.
Unfortunately, that is more than can be justified, I paid $12.50 for the
entire laptop, with a working hard drive (in fact, a working everything
except it had a broken backlight)(how do you break the backlight without
breaking the actual LCD panel itself?).

An no, it's nowhere near 13.3". In this instance, the backlight runs
vertically along the right side of the screen (on the short edge ....
first time I've ever seen that). I'm not sure of the "correct" length,
but I believe it to be something less than 200mm. Diameter is probably
indeed around 2mm, but Digikey doesn't list any bulbs that short in a
diameter that small, I think that 2.4mm or so is about as low as they go
(they do have some 2mm tubes in longer lengths).

I could not get your URL to work, and I'd like to see the end caps ... I
found the lamps. As I mentioned I saved the old wires and rubber caps
after cutting them off the old broken tube. I may try to order a tube,
solder the wires make it work.

I might be blowing smoke into my own brain but let me visualize this
thing: its a vertically mounted CCFL that shattered inside the LCD. Was
it mounted in a copper/brass/aluminum or plastic (likely not plastic)
rail? If so, what is the length -- in millimeters -- of the channel in
to which the CCFL is supposed to fit? That should give you a good idea
of the length of lamp you need. Of course you'll need a shorter lamp
than the channel length, for the extra space needed by the end caps.

Sorry about the bustimicated link. Try a parts search on 289-1133-ND at
the digi-key website. It's a little big for a 2mm lamp, but my guess is
that since the LCD is a little older, it will probably have had a
slightly thicker lamp, which could have been as wide as 3mm. If it was
that wide you probably dont want to get much more narrow with your
replacement, otherwise the inverter may not be able to light it.

Your figuring is correct, and I already did that. I need a lamp
"somewhat shorter than" 200mm for this 13.3" LCD panel. Part of the
issue is that I put the panel (which I had disassembled) back together
and put it back into the laptop without doing the measuring first, and I
really don't want to take it apart again just to measure it (I probably
will, probably this weekend, but I don't want to and I haven't yet).

I will get the smallest diameter available in whatever length I select,
which is going to be somewhere between 2.2mm and 3mm in diameter.

FYI-

Mouser also has a mess of backlights:
http://tinyurl.com/8ao3y

JKL Components is the company that sells them to Mouser and Digi-Key,
and they have some lamps that neither DigiKey nor Mouser carries:
http://jkllamps.com.fluorescent.html

....and Moniserv has some, but not nearly as many:

Thanks, that is useful.

Well, I'm going to get brave and try something.

I opened up the panel again, and it looks like the right size is either
200mm or just a bit less than that (say 196 mm).

However, no one has a 200mm lamp in anything less than a 5.6mm diamater,
which is FAR too large. In fact, in the end, the closest I could come
to anything that even might work is a 188mm lamp with a 2.6mm diameter.
So I ordered it (mouser) and we will see what happens. My guess is
it's just a couple of mm too short, but maybe it will work. I cut off
the old wiring harness from the original lamp, and I will solder that to
the ends of the new lamp. Should be interesting.

Oh, the cost was $10.79 plus shipping.

What is the screen size? I have some tubes for 14" screens

It's a 13.3" screen, but on this screen the lamp runs along the short
edge (the right side of the screen). This is very unusual, the
backlight lamps almost always run along the long edge (top or bottom).
The overall lamp length is 200mm or perahps a bit less.

This may not help your particular situation, but I've done this in the past.
Steal a tube out of an old unused scanner. Everybody has a scanner. Most
are rarely used. Cannibalize the tube out of it and get some use out of
it!!

Hey Barry tkhanks for the
help on USB prob. If your up to a solder job measure your channel
width and length and make sure you buy a lamp smaller than you need
as they come with about 3/8th's or more end wire you can clip as to
process check this url
http://microspos4less.com/backlight.htm :retard:

As it turns out, the only lamp that I was able to get was 188mm, which
is clearly too short. It works, but the right-edge corners (both of
them) are noticeably dark. What I need looks like about 194 to 196mm,
but there is nothing between 188 and WAY over 200mm available from
Digikey or Mouser.
