I see laptops with 14" and 15" screens both described as being designed to
be run at 1024x768. I presume that 1024x768 is more suited to 14" screens
and that this resolution on a 15" screen would look /stretched/. Is this
correct?

I'm presuming that a 14" LCD screen would be equivalent in screen size to a
15" CRT monitor. Is this correct?

I've tried searching and I can't find any definitive answer to this.

Hi Cool Guy,

XGA on both machines will look good. The size of the pixels will just
be different. The only time you run into a problem with the screen
looking stretched is if you go to a lower non-native resolution. If
you want to see what really bad stretched looks like, you should get a
WXGA display and set it to XGA or SVGA. It's so bad it is funny.

As to what size CRT is the equivalent of a 14" LCD, it depends on the
CRT manufacturer since the don't go by viewable display area.

The 15" screen won't look stretched. The difference between the 14 and 15"
screen are the size of the pixels. The 15" model will have slightly larger
pixels than the 14" screen. As for comparing to a crt monitor, the 14" lcd
will indeed have roughly the same screen realestate as the 15" crt monitor.

Your 1st assumption is incorrect. A given pixel resolution is not
inherintly "more suited" to any given physical size. LCDs have physical
pixels, unlike a CRT, and you can make them over a wide range of
densities (pixels per square inch). LCD screens with 1024x768
resolution are made in sizes from 7" to 17", although 10" to 15" is most
common. Most LCDs smaller than 13" are 800x600, and most 17" LCD
screens are 1280x1024.

A 14" LCD has an image size just a tiny bit larger than a typical 15"
CRT, but there is no exact correlation (most 15" CRT's have an image
size around 13").

Hi Cool Guy,

My vision is not what it use to be. I am running a HP Pavilion
zd7010us with a 17" WXGA (1440 * 900) display. If I were to step down
in screen size (very much doubt it.) I would go with the 15" display.
