new T40 owner has dumb questions
Posted by DBojano228 on August 25th, 2003

I just received my new T40. I've never owned a laptop before but I like it lot
even though I haven't had much time to play with it. I noticed that IBM doen't
really give much documentation for the laptop -- they want you to hit the
Access IBM button to get more information, but it doesnt answer all my
questions.

I noticed I have a folder that will somehow load drivers and files like that on
my laptop. I'm reluctant to toy around with anything that I really don't need,
so what am I missing?

Also, I was under the impression that IBM installed its Lotus Smartsuite
utility on all of its pc's and laptops. I can't seem to find it on my
notebook. Is it something that I have to install myself from a buried
directory or is it not there at all? I really dont need to use it but if its
there I'd like to try it out for awhile, until the new MS Office 2003 comes out
in October.

Should I be using the Access IBM area to download more IBM software? I know
IBM has some sort of security software. I have no idea if I have it or need
it. My laptop will mainly be used for internet access at home (replace my
ancient pc) and for grad school. But I'll take any free software/updates that
I can get for my laptop.

Is there a way to find out what I really need to do/configure my T40 to get the
most out of it? Thanks.

When I got mine some time ago I had to call IBM to send the disk. they
don't ship it with the laptop. look for a 800# on a lotus flier that
should have come with it.

You use IBM Update Connector for driver updates, should be in the start
menu. Never use windows update to update drivers just windows
problems.

read in this news group and ibm.ibmpc.thinkpad. there is also a
mailing list a google search should turn it up.

Thanks for the help...I'll check for the offer for the free CD. Also, thanks
for pointing out the thinkpad group...I found it on Google. Its not available
on AOL. Yet another reason to dump AOL!

Ask your ISP to carry it. The set of newsgroups that any ISP carries is
arbitrary, and mine, at least, has been amenable in the past to adding a
specific newsgroup upon customer request.

If it is not showing under the all groups listing your ISPs server does not
do it. Could be worth an email to them asking for it to be added.
