notebooks with synaptics touchpad
Posted by Tornado on September 28th, 2003

I am shopping for a notebook with only the synatpics touchpad due to its
excellent programmability. Can someone suggest brands/models that use
synaptics?

Also, does anyone know if you can use synaptics driver with other touchpads?

Finally, what's happening to synaptics? Their touchpads used to be very
common on notebooks, but nowadays I see mostly Alps being used.

I recently purchased an eMachines m5310. I have been pleasantly surprized
about how much I like this machine. One of the reasons I like it so much is
the Synaptics touch pad.

I don't know what other requirements you might have in a portable, so it is
a little hard to feel right suggesting a machine based solely upon the
single feature of the touchpad. So, == XP-2400M processor 40Gb HDD
512megs PC-2100 15.4 inch widescreen built in Broadcom mini-pci 54g
Lan/56KV.92/Firewire 24X combo burner DVD read PCMCIA 32bit cardbus
slot External display capable 6.5 lbs with battery installed 3+
Hour battery life under moderate use, and of course the Synaptics touchpad
with scroll on the right. The best part was the pricetag at 1050 USD after
a 150 USD rebate from Best Buy.

Very happy with my HP ZE 1210. Definitely download the updated drivers,
though, because the first few days were a nightmare until I updated.

Averatec. Awesome subnotebook with all the features of a Vaio for hundreds
less. Definitely utilizes a Synaptics touchpad.

Actually I am interested in subnotebooks and ultraportables. Sorry I
didn't make myself clear. I will check out the Averatec.

I looked at the Fujitsu P5010 and the Sony TR1A, but was turned off by
their use of the Alps. It's a shame these high-end products use such
inferior (IMHO) touchpads. Similarly, the Dell highend notebook I use
at the office also comes with the Alps. I have grown to dislike the
Alps touchpad because of my experience with the Dell - it is jerky,
imprecise, and lacks important features such as the ability to define
keyboard macros.

Until Alps improves their product (hardware and/or driver) I will filter
out notebooks with Alps from my selection.
