Old Sharp + New WiFi Card
Posted by Professor Fate on December 7th, 2003

A friend just gave me the wonderful gift of a Sharp PC-9000 Notebook,
with Windows 95 still intact. As I already have a LinkSys WiFi card
and driver, my plan now would be to equip this old laptop as a
cafe-ready web browser; slow (100MHZ Pentium 1) but still useful,
maybe for the kids. The only problem is, there is no CDROM drive in it
- only a 28.8 modem card. Does anyone know how I could either:

1. Find and insert a working CD that fits this unit.

2. Hook up an external CD.

3. Download the driver using the 28.8 modem.

?

Great -- thanks.

Your internet provider probably provides a landline connection along with
your broadband access in case you need to access your provider on the road
or if broadband access goes down. Check your provider's website to see if
they have a phone number available. That way you can download the drivers
via modem.

You can also try using 3.5" floppies if the driver is small enough to fit on
one... not an easy task anymore.

There are old external CD drives (I have one) or, more commonly,
external ZIP drives which connect via a parallel port. Perhaps you
can transfer the drivers to ZIP on another PC if the Sharp has a PP.

Make sure that the old PC-9000 is compatible. It may not have Cardbus
and the LinkSys card may need it.

You should be able to download drivers from the LinkSys site

http://www.linksys.com/download/
