- Older modem question
- Posted by Phil on January 14th, 2004
Daughters friend has an older laptop, uses a Megahertz modem, cable
connector to the phone line is $60 .... I'm tempted too solder a
regular female phone jack to the two pins that pop out when the connection
cover is opened . Does anyone know if the connection is still made when the
little cover is popped opened ? It would be easier too tap into the too
exposed pins when it is open and slap on some " Super Glue ' too keep it
all in place .... scary huh ?
Any
suggestions ?
Thanks , Phil

Sure sure, you just want us to comment on your unique usage of the word

Your post makes no sense at all, unless I'm misunderstaning it.
The "two pins that pop out" is called an "X-Jack", and it accepts a
standard modular RJ-11 plug. The connector for the $60 cable (which you
can probably find for a lot less) is totally optional, for rare
situations in which the "X-Jack" can't be used. The cable didn't come
with the modems, in most cases (with some models it did), and most
owners never acquired it.
Use the X-Jack, no soldering or glue is required.

I was describing it from memory, I have the modem now, it is labeled "
with XJAck connector," What I am trying to do is save her the $60 for the
connector by hard wiring directly to the exposed pins on the modem , ( the
two gold plated pins that are revealed when the connector slot on the modem
is opened )
Thanks

Just plug a standard $2 RJ11 phone cord into the X-Jack, that's what it's
there for. No soldering required!
Open the X-Jack, insert the phone cord from the TOP, you're done.

I way over complicated this thing , took the card into work, guy I work
with was very familiar with the set up, the girls dad who is the original
owner side tracked me with what it would need ...i.e the $60 cable , the
connection is very clever when you look at it , a little fragile maybe .
Thanks to all, end of the
subject !
