This is an illumination problem, and is well documented. Google:
fluorescent lamp for references. Fluorescent lamps will change the
emitted color as phosphors diffuse to the anode and cathode. Since each
phosphor has its own set of emission frequencies, as the most mobile
phosphors are lost from the mix, the color contribution of the lost
phosphors causes the color shift. Different manufacturers use different
phosphors, so the color shift will depend on the manufacturer's phosphor
mix. Pink is a common color shift.

Nitpick:
Phosphors are coated on the outside of the tube, they can't migrate.
What can happen is that the mercury leaks out or combines with the
phosphors in such a manner that it will no longer properly support
a suitable discharge, and the other fill gasses (often including neon) glow
in addition.

The lamps are flourescent, not neon.
Could be either a lamp or inverter, but my guess would be to try the
inverter first.

Provide one (1) reference to support this statement which is patently
incorrect.

Err, make that outside of the cavity, not of course the outside of the
tube, which is of course false.

Anyways, standard solution is the send the laptop to IBM for replacement
of the lamps. Cheap under warranty, a little more if not.
