Please recommend a TP model
Posted by Al. C on April 11th, 2005

Folks.
I have an ancient Thinkpad IBM 600e running Mepis 3.3 (a Debian derivative)
with the 2.4 kernel. Has 256mb memory which is about max for this model.
Runs fine but slow. Its my backup machine so I don't use it often... except
when I go on the road to show our Jaya123 web-service
(http://www.jaya123.com) which we demo on local apache2, MySQL, etc. Works
OK, but still slow. Time to get something new.

I love the quality of the TP... and how well they run Linux. There are a
billion TP models. I don't want to spend a ton of money, but want something
with a P4 and at least 512MB. Being lightweight would be nice but it's not
a big deal. Anyone recommend a model and maybe a place to buy it? Does IBM
ever have 'closeouts' on models they are putting out to pasture? What is
"Centrino"? Is this a chip, an architecture, or a protocol? Do I want/need
it for wireless at an airport?

Thanks folks.

Al C.

Hi Al,

Centrino allows laptops to : be thinner, use less energy; longer batter
life, produce less heat; be quieter. It's worth getting. Wireless - get it
if you need it. IBM do special deals every now and then, but they're not
particularly special. Top of the range is the T series. R series is also
excellent.

Duncan.
P.S. There's a spelling mistake on your website - a were should be where in
FAQs under what about security?

Thanks for the info. I'm going to start looking for a new laptop in the
'lower range' of the TP series and maybe I can come up with a 'deal' but
I'm not counting on it.

Al
PS: Thanks for the tip on the spelling. Fixed it.

It's getting to be less important, but I still recommend that your Linux
distro be checked thoroughly against the hardware on a new laptop to
prevent surprises.

Oh, absolutely. When I bought my wife a laptop last year (April) I went to
Circuit City with a Mepis CD (Mepis, like Knoppix is Linux on a CD. Pop it
in, boot up and you are running a full Linux. There are even ways to save
to the HD. If you like what you see you can then install.) I tried every
laptop with the CD: HP, Toshiba, Compaq, Sony, Averatec, and a few no-name
generics. Worked on everything except Compaq. She wanted the Toshiba...
which I think is crap... but it was her choice. She is a writer and MUST
have M$Word. She runs Slackware 9.1 with M$ Word under Crossover Office
(codeweavers.com) and is happy as a clam. We're a Linux house... no viruses
or ad/spyware here. I run Mepis (which is Debian 'unstable') on a tower
because I like being on the bleeding edge.

You should be able to put 512mb in that machine despite the specs saying
otherwise.

Actually, the specs have been updated to show that most 600E models will max
out at 554MB RAM with two 256MB PC100 lo-density So-DIMM installed along
with the 32MB on the motherboard.
