- Processor M ? ? ?
- Posted by Ray Jenkins on June 28th, 2003
I've been told that it's important to get an "M" processor in a laptop to
prevent overheating.
But I find that only a small percentage of the laptops carry this. I'm
looking at a Sony PCG-FRG25, for instance, and it doesn't seem to have it.
Is it really all that important? If so, why don't top makers like Sony have
it?

Whoever told you that you have to have a Pentuim M to avoid overheating was
completly wrong. If you want a good idea of what processor you should get

Thanks Sam -- that site answered my question.
I guess the only real question remaining is, should I trust a quality maker
like Sony to put the best
available technology in its newest laptops?

Normaly, I purchase in the summer of each even year a new notebook
But summer 2002 was full the so calle "mobile" P4 disaster.
I waited 9 month long with my old, but cool mobile Celeron 500 notebook
from 2000 until it was for me possible to purchase a new Pentium M
notebook.
The last month before the purchase was very difficult, because my
nearly 11.000 working hours old notebook developt suddenly several
severe failures, it was the hell to work with it, but I thought not one
second to give up waiting for the Banias and to buy a hot
so called "mobile" P4

@hercules.btinternet.com:
Sony lacks decent support. That's true.
But Sony also makes high quality laptops.

Not true. It is true that the Pentium M (which is part of the
Centrino package) runs much cooler than Pentium 4 CPU's, but that
hardly means Pentium 4's overheat in laptops. I am typing this on my
lap with my Toshiba 2GHZ Celeron (P4-based) laptop, and the bottom is
warm but not hot on my legs. The machine has never overheated.

That's because it has only been on the market a few months. Intel has
been pushing the hell out of Centrino, which contains the Pentium M.
Remember that very few laptops will be Pentium M but not Centrino.

I believe Sony has Centrino (Pentium M) laptops available.
See http://www.intel.com for more info on Centrino.

If you go to Sony's web site www.sonystyle.com you can configure most
notebooks to carry one of a number of processors, about half of which
are Pentium-M or Mobile Celeron. As you'll notice, however, the price
goes up quite a bit on the Pentium 4-Ms.

Just be careful not to confuse Pentium-M with Pentium-4-M, they are
two different processors. Nothing wrong with either, but they have

Transmeta is slow.
So to perform a certain task, a Transmeta notebook needs longer
and needs more electrical power than a Pentium_M
