Is it me or are Laptop/notebook computer Proprietary .... I mean you can build a Desktop computer with no prolems and seem to have an open architecture, but the laptops/notebooks seem so closed in that sense. Anyone know why? It doesn't make sense to me ...

Well, exactly what would you want to upgrade in a notebook? Remember that you've only got so much room for fans and heatsinks, and most stock notebooks run mighty hot as it is, so your options at upgrading video and CPU would be very limited.
On the other hand, if you're just wanting to future-proof yourself, well, join the crowd! But personally, I think it's best just to buy gear that suits your needs now and hopefully, for the next 18 months. Beyond that, the crystal ball grows hazy: Today, 802.11G and DVD+/-RW are hot but who knows what tomorrow's must-have will be? It wasn't so long ago that having sound, a pointing device and CD-ROM seemed like big deals.

Easy! the manufacturers are attempting to pack as much as they can
into a small and light package, only way to do that is to
custom-design the parts.
