- QUESTION toshiba a20/a30 laptops or others... p4 vs celeron vs mobile
- Posted by tiktak on November 13th, 2005
okay, just little confused with regards to processor types.. I recently
dealt with a toshiba a30 which to my understand is (depending on exact
model) something like say a celeron (I think they still call it a p4)
2.5gig. that being said, is this equivalent to an M techonlogy cpu? if so,
can I actually call an a20 toshiba a (say) 1.5M cpu?
similarily, I dealt recently with a toshiba a20 which I believe has a full
blown genuine p4 cpu inside.. not celeron, not M tech. just p4. and again
depending on exact model, I dealth with a 2.66ghz.
can someone maybe just comment on this. I was always confused with M vs
celeron vs real p4. I think most people just refer to celeron as P4
CELERON and sometimes skip the celeron part altogether..which makes it
confusing and impossible to distinguish between the real p4 and celeron. I
think you get the point.
thanks!

You can legitimately call it a 1.5M if it contains a Pentium M 1.5GHz
processor. Otherwise you can call it what you like, but it won't make
it so.
Yeah? Who? Anybody doing this would be doing it as a marketing
strategy, trying to make potential buyers think that they are getting a
P4 when buying a Celeron.
You can think of a Celeron as a down-market P4. The technology is
similar, but the Celeron has less cache, thus making the P4 faster for
some tasks. Celerons are cheaper than equivalent (i.e. same speed) P4s.
The Pentium M uses completely different architecture. It is NOT a P4,
and it is not a Celeron, and the M's speed ratings cannot be compared
to those of the P4/Celeron.

thanks for the info.
now to add to the confusion, I just heard/read the centrino is yet another
beast altogether. true?
now to sum it up, in terms of quality and performance, which is the order of
best performing cpus? how does this sound:
(best first)
centrino
mobile
p4
p4/celeron
ya?

Centrino is not a processor, it is a marketing name that Intel assigned
to systems that use an entire collection of Intel parts and technology.
The processor in Centrino is the Pentium M, but the whole Centrino
package includes the chipset and networking components as well as the CPU.
