Do not make the mistake of assuming anything about Compal based on the
rumored experiences with Toshiba and their Compal line. Compal is a
laptop manufacturer/board design company that contracts with many major
branded vendors. If a major computer vendor contracts with Compal to
manufacture a laptop, the major vendor specifies exactly what and how
that laptop is going to be manufactured. If there is a problem with
Compal-manufactured Toshiba laptops, the problems are rooted in how
Toshiba themselves specified how that laptop was to be manufactured, the
components, the boards, the accessories, the LCD screen and everything
else that ends up in the box.
There are few companies that manufacture their branded electronics.
Boards, components, peripherals are all largely outsourced for design,
manufacturing and assembly. HP, Compaq, IBM, Dell, and Gateway all have
outsourced materials in their laptops, and many are totally built
externally - the companies never physically touch the machines at all,
ever. If these vendors want a certain quality, they will get that
certain quality. Compal has little to do with what these vendors offer
to the public, and is certainly not responsible for subsequent quality
problems. Quality and reliability rests squarely with the branded
vendor.
