I just checked a review of that machine and it states that the system
comes with a 20g or 30g drive. Toshiba probably has some data on the
drives that must be loaded for the system to use it.
Look on Toshiba's web site for a utility disk that will "prepare" the
drive for use in the system. You might also see if there's a "recovery"
mechanism that will rebuild a (logically) damaged disk drive to original
delivery state.
You might also need a BIOS update from Toshiba. Again, check their web site.

I have a half dozen drives here I have tried. Is it possible that this laptop can ONLY boot off
Toshiba drives? I have 2 and they happen to be smaller (6 gig and 2 gig) and it works fine
on them but won't boot off ANY other hard drive (IBM and Hitachi 4gigs, 6 gigs).
The larger drives that I wanted to put in are Seagates.

Did you check the strapping (master, slave, cable select) to make sure they
match the working drive?
