- Re: Cooling pad with Inspiron 8500?

I have a cooler that I use with my notebook just to increase the
lifespan, as it would with ANY notebook.
I'm wondering why you are wanting one?
Also, the 8500 uses a Pentium M so I'm not sure what Roland is talking
about.

Look at
http://users.erols.com/chare/elec.htm
What's built in the 8500 pseudo "notebook" is
practicall a desktop CPU with about 10% less heat.
Even the so called "mobile" P4 is much cooler.
This shit is 3 times hoter than the Pentium M Banias Centrino
And here You see marketing at his worst.
A play to trick people into buying shit.
It's like promotion for cigarettes
A play to trick people into buying shit.

Well first of all I expected it to be hot. I read reviews and everything
before buying this and I'm pleased with it.. it is called a desktop
replacement, after all. Also, marketing did not influence me to buy this.
In fact, I actually don't remember seeing any notebook commercials/ads
when I started research on a laptop I should buy.

Practically the same reason as you. I can tolerate the heat, since it's not
/that/ hot, but I'm still concerned with the system wasting its life away.
I would have gotten the heat pipe cooler, but as the other guy said it wont
work if you have rubber feet on your laptop, which I do.

Yeah, so you're just being overprotective like me then.
I would have bought the cooler no matter what notebook I got.

I got the heat pipe cooler for the same reason, if the rubber feet are just
there for traction and re very short, it will work, but if they are there to
keep the laptop elevated, it will probably only do like 1degree difference.
Next time you are at Best Buy (they are the only store I know of who locks
them in a way that lets you see the bottom), look at the bottom of an HP
ze5300 series. If your feet are even close to that, save your money.
HOWEVER, with my mom's laptop with very thin rubber pads at the bottom, it
is effective enough that the fan (it's an Athlon 4 1.2ghz btw-athlon 4's get
hot) only turns on under real gaming, and even then it's only on low speed,
and only one of the 3 fans (normally after a while of just being on i get
one fan on low, doing anything gets 2 fans on low, and gaming gets one fan
on high and another fan on either low or high).

Hmm.. from my self-measuring, they're about 1-2cm in length. I don't know
if they're used for traction or not, but I'm leaning towards it being used
for elevation.

Length isnt the issue, height is. Mine appear to be able 2mm high.

Hello Richard,
What you describe here is very interesting for me, at least
I think so, but I am not able to understand it all as
I am not in (nor from) your country and am not able to
translate what can a `heat pipe cooler' be in "real life"
here at my place, though I can imagine the concept !
Do you know of an URL where I could see a picture of the stuff
then I'd be able to recogniez the stuff in my country, please ?
TIA
