Well, you didn't say what type of laptop. How you get into the BIOS is
model specific.
Don't use MS-DOS 6.22. Use a "DOS" disk made with Windows 98SE, and
preferably with the still "newer" version of FDISK that supports larger
size drives.
Yes, make the laptop bootable from drive C: to a dos prompt with CD-ROM
support. I presume that you know how to do that. You don't need any
special driver, the generic driver that comes with all MS operating
systems is fine. [Oakcdrom.sys; you also need MSCDEX.EXE and the proper
installation of these in autoexec.bat and config.sys]
At that point, copy the \Win98 partition from the Windows 98 CD to a
\Win98 partition on the hard drive, then do the installation from that
partition on the hard drive, NOT from the CD itself. After the OS is
installed and running, it is only then that you will have to install
drivers for the screen, modem, lan, motherboard and whatever other
drivers your particular laptop requires. These should be available from
the manufacturer's web site.
