By far the most challenging app for your laptop will be the video editing
and rendering you propose. Whatever brand you choose, pay special attention
to memory (at least 1 GB), hard drive speed and capacity (100 gig or more
preferred.) Typically, a desktop used for even minimal video editing -
trimming clips and adding titles - will be outfitted with a second internal
drive devoted to video files alone. Obviously you will have everything on
one drive, but what you will want to have at your disposal is an external
USB/Firewire hard drive where you can store important raw footage and clear
up space on your laptop's drive. (Note, a project of uncompressed raw
captured video totalling just half an hour would require a couple of DVD's.)
One of the things I didn't realize until I actually started editing home
video was the need for working space on the hard drive of, depending on how
much cutting you do, up to twice the size of the captured video. If you
working in uncompressed avi format, space on your hard drive disappears
fast! You will also need to keep your drive well defragmented to minimizing
video editing problems. Good luck!
