Yes, the HDD is a customer replacable unit. All you need is a small
screwdriver - one screw to pull the drive out of the machine, and a few more
on the bracket/slide. IBM has a great hardware maintenance manual on their
web site that details every step.
I just did a clean install of W2k on my X20 and gave it the entire 20 GB. No
need to keep any recovery partitions if you do backups. All the IBM specific
software (drivers etc.) is available for download on their web site, just in
case you need to reinstall it. And it probably is a newer version than what
originally came with the machine.
